North Korea Cites "Tragedy" of Countries That Give Up Nuclear Programs

By David Chance; Editing By Nick Macfie

February 22, 2013 - (Reuters) - North Korea has bolstered its defenses against a "hostile" United States with its third nuclear test, it said on Thursday, noting that countries that had bowed to U.S. pressure to abandon their nuclear plans had suffered "tragic consequences".

The North carried out its largest nuclear test to date last week, in defiance of U.N. resolutions, prompting warnings of tougher sanctions for the isolated and impoverished state and its young ruler, Kim Jong-un.

Libya abandoned its nuclear program in 2003 in a bid to mend relations with the United States and later saw leader Muammar Gaddafi overthrown in an uprising that was eventually supported militarily by Washington.

In apparent reference to Libya, North Korea said it never backed down.

"The tragic consequences in those countries which abandoned halfway their nuclear programs... clearly prove that the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) was very far-sighted and just when it made the (nuclear) option," North Korea's KCNA news agency said.

North Korea has told China, its sole major ally, that it plans to stage more nuclear tests, according to a source with close connections to the top leadership in both countries.

It staged the latest test in response to tighter U.N. sanctions imposed in January after the country launched a long-range rocket last year in a move that critics said was designed to prove technology for an intercontinental ballistic missile.

North Korea knows better.

Do you think my dear HB, that Iran too should come out and say it aloud "we are building the bomb"?

What do you think, Iran should drop the curtain now?

Iran is already involved in North Korea nuclear test and icbm test who else is providing money and materiAl to NK.
May be NK also tested iran nuclear bomb.

North Korea's nuclear development can go up to this point, it's solely North Korea under Chinese protection, otherwise it has been bombed back to stone age by US.

You starve them, they don't.

You put sanctions on them, disallow trade with them, and strangle them economically so that the poor population suffers.

Your kind of propaganda can only work against indoctrinated minions of dictators. Its clear that every country in the world is responsible for their own people. North Korea is responsible for the well being of their own people, not America. So what country do you represent, US or Pakistan? If you are so anti-US, why are you still here? Why contribute to the economy of this country if you disagree with America so much. Or maybe you are here visiting Disneyland.

Any foreigner who take up America citizenship should surrender his or her allegiance of their former country and serve and protect America first.

The real tragedy is when the North Koreans eat their own babies.

Its sad that the North Korean regime would starve their own population.

one shouldnt lecture people regarding matters that they are not honest about themselves. It is very idiotic to think that you can ask others to disarm when you have one of the biggest arsenal in the world. All the nuclear powers of this world were born after US either cornered them directly or indirectly. Disarm yourself first and others will surely follow.

I never understood why so few North Koreans are seen outside Korea while Iranians are everywhere? Does NK bar travel? Or is it the sanctions?

One one hand, The North Koreans say they need the bomb to protect their country and on the other hand their citizens are starving to death. In the end, you ask yourself, What are they protecting exactly?.

Thats true, when you are so impatient to take the un-necessary credit, then you should be man enough to take the credit for this impoverished situation of NK that they retort to consume there own impoverished. NK stands no where today as compared to SK, although being same race and demographics

Americans having hard time to believe that some people is gearing up and making the world balance in power :D , it is ok , you will get use to it.
