Non-party govt must for credible polls: Yunus
Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus on Thursday said there was no scope for holding the next general elections without a non-party caretaker government.A non-party government is a must for a participatory and credible election, hetold reporters after a meeting with Krishak Sramik Janata League president Abdul Kader Siddiqui at Yunus Centre.
Kader Siddiqui said he and Yunus had agreed that the next general election would be a very crucial event. Most political parties would not contest the polls without a caretaker government, he said, alleging that the present government was more ruthless than Hitlers dictatorship.
Yunus and Siddique held the meeting when Awami League and BNP have taken opposite stands about the way the election should be held.
The AL says that the next elections would be held as per the constitution that allows no caretaker government. But BNP insists that the polls must be held under a non-party caretaker government.
Yunus, a strong critic of the present government, said the political leaders should start discussions immediately to resolve the controversy over the next general elections and the issue of caretaker government.
Yunus said the country seemed headed for a crisis that the people did not want. He said the people would not forgive any party or individual who would be instrumental to such a crisis.
He thanked the Election Commission for eventually not changing the Representation of the People Order (RPO). I hope the EC will not bring any changes to the RPO before the elections, he said.
