ST PETERSBURG (RUSSIA): President Vladimir Putin asserted on Thursday that Russia’s “trust-based” relations with India – which he described as one of its “closest friends” – will not be diluted by Moscow’s growing ties with Pakistan and other countries.
During an interaction with PTI, Putin said that India is the only country with which Russia has “deep cooperation” in delicate areas such as missiles.

The Russian president, however, sidestepped a question on Kashmir, and said that “it is up to you” to assess whether Pakistan is fueling terrorism in the Indian state.

“But no matter where the threat comes from, it is unacceptable and we will always support India in its fight against terrorism,” he added.

The Russian leader said that it is ridiculous that Delhi should be restricted in maintaining contacts with other partnering countries just because Russia has a “special relationship” with India.

“We do not have any tight (military) relations with Pakistan,” he said, speaking through an interpreter. “And for sure our relations with Pakistan have no impact on trade between India and Russia.”

But at the same time, Putin sidestepped a question on Kashmir, and said "it is up to you" to assess whether Pakistan is fuelling terrorism in the Indian state. "But no matter where the threat comes, it is unacceptable and we will always support India in its fight against terrorism," he added.

Putin further said that just because Russia has a "special relationship" with India, it does not mean India should be restricted in having contacts with other "partnering countries. This is ridiculous."

Sitting around a rectangular table with a select group of 10 global news agency editors, the 64-year-old Russian leader took questions one by one on subjects related not only of interest to the editors' countries but also of wider global concerns such as Syria, US President Donald Trump and the future of an emerging multi-polar world.

"India is a huge country of more than 1 billion population. Russia is also a huge country. Both Russia and India have a lot of context and mutual interests. We are respectful toward all Indian interests," he said, citing the deep defence relations between the two countries.
"I don't think we should push figures here in our military cooperation because it has an unprecedented level in its volume and quality. (But) there is no other country in the world that we have such deep cooperation in delicate areas such as missiles, and we benefit with cooperation with India. And this results from our trust-based relations with India," he said.

He did not elaborate, but this was a clear reference to the Russia's long willingness to share high-end defence technology including missile technology with India, which most other countries restrict.

On a question if Russia will use its influence to get Pakistan to stop terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, he said, "We will always support India in its fight against terrorism. I believe Pakistan is taking immense steps to stabilise the situation in the country."

He noted that India and Russia, as part of their summit, are "having a frank dialogue on all these threats. India for us is one of our closest friends. We not only understand each other but also support each other."

The interaction was held at the Konstantin Palace, a sprawling complex of grand buildings filled with 18th century paintings, porcelain, lawns, waterways and pavilions overlooking the Gulf of Finland.

Of course their engagement with Pakistan was always going to be a bit measured given the sensitive nature of the India-Pak equation. Can't blame Russia for leveraging the Indians with fake news like the SU-35 story or real stuff like the joint military drills either.

In the post cold war world, Putin sees for Russia a role similar to that as the US. They're big power brokers wrt Iran and the nuke deal, in Syria too (obviously), and they share a border with the DPRK.

They have a stake in the region, experience in Afghanistan, historically deep military ties with India, makes sense for them to reach out a bit to Pakistan too.

These statements are done during visits. Russia is has changed its policy towards Pakistan and is willing to work. Of course, it is at a limited level now and might grow over the period of time. However, with or without this statement we should not think too much into this, even if they have ties, it will not make much difference to us.

JF17 is not a concern, IAF doesn't even consider it a threat in their threat perspective. The Chinese ordered for a 1000 rd93 engines and India wasn't in a position to overturn that.

In reality, in the case of India-Pak in particular, there are highly capable and well trained men and women operating within robust and multiple fail safe redundancy compliant command structures and direct back-channels/hotlines both up and down the hierarchy, on both sides.

Sure, I am just considering the delivery of the 4 helicopters as a barometer to the much taunted and much vaunted Russo Pakistani defence relationship that's been going haywire on this forum for couple of years. .I actually thought that there was something serious and that the Chinese were able to influence the Russians to deal with the pakistanis.

There were thousands of threads here of how the Russians have abandoned India and how pakistanis will be getting su35's, S400's and what not.

In fact many here have drawn out fantasy lists of Russian weapons to be procured and on order from Russia.

But, for a layman like me, the barometer starts when the "4 helicopters" are delivered. .that's when I will start to worry.

Goes without saying. Russia and America are of no consequence to Pakistan. As long as we are not enemies with these 2 that's all that matters. The only 2 nations who matter to Pakistan are China and Turkey. The future of Pakistan is intertwined with both these countries. Only they matter to us.

Pakistan defence budget is comparatively small as compared to india.if Pakistan will let say do 2 billion dollar business than India can easily pour 5 billion.Russia will calculate everything before leaving a long trusted ally.
