No security clearance for PTI, PML-N rallies yet
May 06, 2013
RAWALPINDI - ISRAR AHMED -
While two major political parties, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz PML-N) and Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI), are all set for final show of power in the city before ending election campaign on May 9, City District Government Rawalpindi (CDGR) and law enforcement agencies have not issued security clearance to the public rallies.
According to information, PML-N will hold a big public rally in connection with its election campaign in the city on May 7 that will be addressed by Mian Nawaz Sharif whereas PTI Chairman Imran Khans tsunami will hit Rawalpindi on May 9 with addressing a large public gathering in Liaquat Bagh on Benazir Bhutto Road (BBR) at 06:00p.m. Awami Muslim League (AML) President and candidate for NA-55 Sheikh Rashid Ahmed will also muster public support for PTI and his party.
District Coordination Officer (DCO) Rashid Mehmood Langrial, while talking to TheNation on Sunday, said that the CDGR had written letters to City Police Officer (CPO) and Special Branch of Punjab Police for the security clearance for the two massive political gatherings in the city but had not received any reply from the both departments in this regard. He said that CDGR has no objection on the schedule of the public gatherings but the final decision yet to be taken by CPO. It is the CPO who will say final words whether police will be able to provide protection to the large number of gatherings or not. Only after that, CDGR will permit the political parties to organise rallies, he added.
Inspector Raja Fayyaz, police spokesman, when contacted put all burden on the shoulders of CDGR, saying: Police were nothing to do with awarding permission to the political parties for rallies but CDGR will be final authority.
When asked as what type of security plan police devised to guard the rallies, he said it depended on district government what he did in this regard.
Regardless of the tug of war between police and CDGR, the much confident and jubilant workers and leaders of both rival parties insisted that come what may, they would hold these rallies as per schedule. The whole city has also been decorated with the party flags, posters, banners, huge-sized portraits of Mian Nawaz Sharif on PML-N and PTIs Chief Imran Khan along with BBR as well as in every nook and corner of the city to gather more and more people.
Despite several attempts, CPO Abdul Razzaq Cheema could not be contacted for his comments.
