WASHINGTON: Former president Pervez Musharraf called Wednesday for a more gradual approach against militants such as Lashkar-e-Taiba, saying they enjoyed sympathy for fighting India.

The United States and India have urged Pakistan to step up pressure against movements such as Lashkar-e-Taiba which is blamed for planning the bloody siege of Mumbai that killed 166 people two years ago.

“You can’t rock the boat so much that the boat capsizes,” Musharraf said at the Atlantic Council think-tank in Washington.

“While these things have to be done, allow piecemeal, gradual action through a well thought-out strategy which does not disturb the entire law and order situation in Pakistan,” Musharraf said.

Musharraf acknowledged that Lashkar-e-Taiba and like-minded groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammad were “involved in terrorism in Pakistan” but said they have been “very popular” for fighting Indian rule in divided Kashmir.

“Since they were going to Kashmir and fighting the Indian army, it went along with the psyche of the people of Pakistan — with everyone,” Musharraf said.

Musharraf said the Jamaat-ud-Dawa, a wing of Lashkar-e-Taiba, “did an excellent job” in relief operations following major floods this year and “the best work” in the wake of the 2005 earthquake on the Pakistani side of Kashmir.

“It’s a difficult situation for any government in Pakistan. So the root is (to) resolve the Kashmir dispute, frankly,” Musharraf said.

Musharraf renewed criticism of President Barack Obama for not raising Kashmir during his recent visit to India and for not stopping in Pakistan, the frontline US partner in the war in Afghanistan.

Musharraf banned Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad in 2002 after they were accused of storming the Indian parliament. But many experts say the ban has been half-hearted, with Pakistan believing the groups serve its strategic purpose.

I think his voices are more heard in India than in Pakistan.. Here, he has lost the remining vapors of respect and now even his x-supporters realize what a mindless character he is. To me, a barking dog and speaking Musharaf sound the same.

I am 50% with you. but after seeing title of Ex-President and Ex-Head of PA before his name, its difficult to ignore his statements. Even Wall street journal called him for interview after Obama's India visit. At best GOP should tell him to keep shut.

IMHO, the man does have a point.

The Pakistani establishment has been nourishing such groups for a long time. However, with international heat turning up against Pakistan for indulging in such activities, few realized the futility of supporting these gangs. Gradually over time, if official reports are to be believed, the Pakistani establishment has slowly distanced itself from such groups in the vain hope that they will collapse without the state's covert and overt support. Alas, they were wrong. These groups have now taken a life of their own, finding new sources of funding and support among the masses espousing their anti-India and religious BS rhetoric. Their anger has slowly grown to now target even the Pakistani government machinery and their armed forces.

With the distancing of Pakistani establishment from such groups, the question arises as to what to do with them. One cannot just ban them hoping to dismantle these groups. Such groups will not dismantle that easily given the tremendous support they enjoy among the masses for their "social & charity work" if not for anti-India sloganeering and will put up a stiff resistance which will lead to mayhem and violence in Pakistan.

Mush is right when he says that it will take time to neutralize these groups and their ideologies. However the onus is on Pakistani authorities to see that such groups do not indulge in terrorist activities inside/outside of Pakistan and in India. And to do that the GoP should turn a blind eye to the charity events of such groups but slowly disassemble their terrorist training & ideology infrastructure. Once these groups are defanged, then GoP can do whatever they please with the "supreme commanders".

But Mush is also wrong when he says that Kashmir should be solved to neutralize these gangs. Kashmir got de-hyphenated from these groups once they started staging attacks in Indian cities other than in Kashmir, and once these groups developed contacts with the taliban.

Frankly Kashmir Dispute is the root cause of All this. And Quite Frankly the Strategik Depth in Afghanistan some how also Finds its roots attached with the Kashmir Dispute.
If the Dispute is resolved then theres no reason for Pakistan to keep these groups alive.

It was then. Not anymore. These groups have developed a life support of their own. Withdrawing of Govt support will not make them cease to exist. Infact, with Kashmir solved, these gangs will look at newer problems to justify their existence. I wouldnt be surprise of they start of talking about turning Pakistan into a Islamic Caliphate/Emirate- the wet dream of AQ.

If you can't ignore his statements than read all what he says:

India creating ‘anti-Pakistan’ Afghanistan: Musharraf

I am not ignoring it...

but topics are bit are different..
One (anti-India militants)is already is there in Pakistan and other one (creating ‘anti-Pakistan’ Afghanistan)is in so called process

This thread is about anti-India militants who are in Pakistan(means between India and Pakistan) and you are pointing at India's interest in Afghanistan which may hurt Pakistan, here GOP have limited power to stop Indian influence over Af gov.

I am pointing at anti-India militants in Pakistan which GOP can eliminate to create positive atmosphere for further talk with India.

I read a few days back that LeT was losing its popularity a in 2007 and they wanted to conduct something spectacular to gain popularity. Hence the Mumbai attack!

Couldn't agree more more..
Let's keep the nonsense out of discussion but you are not bothered with the guy who brought the nonsense in to the discussion on the first place! :agree:

Musharraf's chance to get elected is once in million. He is just one more handler for USA. They played him nicely earlier and now they are again trying it. By his statement he is putting GOP in some odd situation specially in time of high pitch diplomatic talks and visits are going around sub-continent.
I think so he is mounting pressure on GOP by all possible way , so it will become more difficult for GOP to achieve diplomatic solution in favor of Pakistan regarding India or Afghanistan.
Finally he wants to come back to Pakistan and some how he started some kind of plan.. he is giving more frequent statement now a days and trying to get more visibility.
