NEW DELHI, Jan 20: Indian Defence Minister A. K. Antony said on Tuesday that India would not hand over Samjhauta blast case accused Lt-Col Shrikant Purohit to Pakistan.

Talking to reporters here, Mr Antony said the issue of Purohit was an internal matter of India and Pakistan should not be concerned about it.

“The case (Malegaon blast) is under examination by the Anti-Terror Squad of the Maharashtra police. It is our internal matter. We are investigating it.

“How can Pakistan be concerned with that?” the minister asked when asked about reports from Pakistan that it might demand Purohit’s extradition.

“Our agencies are inquiring about that. Let us wait for the final results. It (investigation) is our responsibility and we are doing it,” Mr Antony said.

Referring to reports that the Indian army was not prepared for a war in the aftermath of the Mumbai attacks, he said: “Our armed forces are in a state of preparedness. They are prepared for meeting any challenge, any eventuality and any threat from any quarter.”

He said there were reports about Pakistan military buildup across the border, but such reports should not be cause of ‘panic’.

“At the moment, the government (of India) is concentrating on diplomatic efforts. There is no question of our armed forces lowering their guard,” he said.

When asked about a group of militants agreeing to put down arms if the Kashmir issue was resolved, the minister said: “This (terrorism) has nothing to do with Kashmir, which is an integral part of India. We will not entertain any kind of interference from any source and any quarter regarding Kashmir.”

Meanwhile, nearly four months after the blast at Malegaon, police have filed a chargesheet naming army officer Lt Col S. Purohit as the main conspirator who provided the explosives, and Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur as the prime accused who arranged for the men who planted the explosives.

The 4,000-page chargesheet, filed by Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) before a special court here on Tuesday, said that Purohit had floated right-wing group Abhinav Bharat in 2007 with an intention to “propagate a separate Hindu Rashtra with its own Constitution”.—APP

Purohit supplied RDX for Samjhauta bomb: ATS

Nashik , New Delhi November 15 The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) suspects that Lt Col Prasad Purohit supplied the RDX that was used in the Samjhauta Express blast on February 18, 2007 that killed 68 passengers.

The ATS suspects Purohit supplied the explosive to a person named ‘Bhagwan’ who is believed to be a link in the bomb blasts.

Seeking an extension of police custody of Purohit, Special Prosecutor for Maharashtra ATS Ajay Misar told a Nashik court that a witness in the Malegaon blast case told the agency that Purohit had claimed he had 60 kg of RDX in his possession which he had got from J&K.

Misar said: “When Purohit was stationed at the Deolali army camp, he had gone to Jammu and Kashmir on official work and is believed to have got 60 kg of RDX and a part of it was given to this link ‘Bhagwan’, who used it in the Samjhauta train blast. The ATS is probing his involvement.”

“Purohit handed over the RDX to Bhagwan who is suspected to be in hiding in the garb of a godman. So Bhagwan is a key link and we hope to learn about his whereabouts and antecedents in the three-day remand given,” Misar told The Indian Express.

The ATS also said that Purohit—along with Pragya Thakur and Dayanand Pandey—is suspected to have played a key role not only in the Malegaon blast of September 29 but in other blasts as well.

The witness, whose statement had been recorded, had said that Purohit showed him two small brown bags containing RDX, which he said he had recovered from J&K, Misar added.

However, Purohit in his statement to the ATS said that he had thrown the 60 kg of RDX into the Jhelum river instead of depositing it in the army depot.

The ATS is also probing the role of a Nashik-based builder who was paid Rs 2.5 lakh by Ajay Rahirkar at the behest of Purohit. The police have already said that funds amounting to lakhs were routed to Rahirkar through hawala channels. Rahirkar, in turn, transferred part of it to Pandey and Purohit’s accounts.

The Haryana police probing the Samjhauta blast (which happened in Panipat in Haryana) are now counting on finding new clues when they get to question Mahant Amritanand alias Dayanand Pandey on Sunday.

The Samjhauta probe trail had reached a dead-end in Indore, but the initial line of investigations was very SIMI-centric as several SIMI leaders including Safdar Nagori came from that area.

Madhya Pradesh police officials involved in the probe last year said that when a SIMI connection failed to emerge, suggestions were made to examine the possible involvement of Hindu right wing groups, but it was not taken up then. Haryana police confirmed the SIMI angle was ruled out after investigations.

A mix of high- and low-intensity explosives was used in the blast on the Indo-Pak friendship train which killed 68 — 42 of them Pakistanis. While a larger quantity of Potassium Chlorate and Sulphur were used to create the bomb, minor quantities of RDX were also found in the bomb, Dr. R K Koshal, ballistic expert from Haryana’s Forensic Science Laboratory confirmed. The use of RDX in ‘traces’ was also seen in explosives used in Mecca Masjid blast in Hyderabad in May 2007 and also in the Malegaon blast.

“There was RDX in traces in the suitcase bomb on the Samjhauta Express and that much was enough for the blast mechanism,” said Kaushal.

ADG Haryana V N Rai who is heading the Samjhauta blast probe, however, said that there is still no major breakthrough in the investigation.”We are closely monitoring the situation and are in touch with Mumbai ATS. Our probe status still stands at Indore”, Rai said.

The bombers had purchased the suitcases from Indore’s Kothari market. Investigations had found that the ‘Kodak’ brand suitcases used in the explosion on the train were purchased from the Abhinandan Bag Centre in Kothari Market while a tailor who sat opposite the bag centre stitched the suitcase covers. That apart, the pipe-bomb shells, Super Saurabh plastic boxes in which the IED was packed were also bought from the same area. Two of the accused in the Malegaon blasts are from Indore.

U need anymore proof. ATS Karkare's team HAD implicated him for the Samjhauta Express attacks. Now he is dead.

This should kill it. He had been implicated now he is not. ATS was led by karkare if u remember and u guys memory is'nt failing.

The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) claimed that Purohit supplied RDX to one “Bhagwan” for
Samjhauta Express blast. Public prosecutor Ajay Misar said Abhinav Bharat’s treasurer
Ajay Rahirkar had handed Rs2.5 lakh to Lt Col P S Purohit.

Do not try to imagine the environment you don't live in. Go through some news in past and you will get the answer. I am living year and I know how it works here. The problem is, you see everything through your 'green' goggle.

Muslims certainly get a good treatment here. And sometimes, more than that in Pakistan itself. Many Muslim artists come in here from Pakistan and India gives them love. Some of my friends are Muslim and they love this place. Not only that, they prey to Hindu Gods, they celebrate Hindu festivals and they HATE it, when there is any harm to India. This is my first hand experience and not derived from so called 'glossy papered reports' that you people use.

You are just concentrating on the exceptions. There are Hindus also which are far from justice. This is certainly unfortunate, but you are making India look like a 'hell for Muslims'.

India needs to comeout clean here. Need to investigate properly. If they dont do it they dont have moral to ask from pakistan!!

Hindu Rashtra ideology was driving force for Malegaon conspirators”

Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad files charge sheet in Malegaon blast case; suspects planned to approach Israel for help

Malegaon blast accused (from left): Lt. Col. Prasad Purohit, Sadhvi Pragnya Singh, Ramesh Upadhyay, Rakesh Dhawade and Sameer Kulkarni being taken to court in Mumbai on Tuesday.

Mumbai: The ‘Hindu Rashtra’ ideology was the driving force for the conspirators behind the Malegaon blast of September 29, 2008. The brain behind the blast, Lt. Col. Prasad Shrikant Purohit, founded the Pune-based Abhinav Bharat in 2007 for this purpose, says the charge sheet filed on Tuesday against 11 accused in the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court.

Abhinav Bharat was to be a “front organisation with the intention of propagating a Hindu Rashtra with their own constitution and aims and objects as Bharat Swarajya, Surajya Suraksha in its preamble.” This and other revelations formed part of the voluminous charge sheet filed by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). The stipulated period of 90 days to file a charge sheet ended on Tuesday.

The charge sheet runs into 4,500 pages and lists 389 witnesses. The MCOCA court will give its order on it on Wednesday.

Before the arguments begin, the court has to take cognisance of the offences under the MCOCA and decide if it can be applied.

The MCOCA has been applied in the Malegaon case on the basis of two charge sheets against Rakesh Dattaram Dhawde for his involvement in the Nanded and Parbhani blasts. Defence has, however, challenged this, contending that these charge sheets came after the Malegaon blast case.

At a press conference held later, ATS chief K.P. Raghuvanshi identified Lt. Col. Purohit, Dhawde, Sadhvi Pragnya Singh Thakur, Ajay Eknath Rahirkar and Sudhakar Dwivedi as the masterminds behind the Malegaon conspiracy.

The other accused are Shiv Narayan Gopal Singh Kalsanghra, Shyam Bhawarlal Sahu, Jagdish Mhatre, Sameer Kulkarni, Sudhakar Chaturvedi and Ramesh Upadhyay.

The organisation conducted meetings in various places across the country, Ahmedabad, Ujjain, Bhopal, Kolkata, Jabalpur, Indore, Faridabad and Pune, where Lt. Col. Purohit came into contact with the other suspects. Having a similar ideological bent of mind, they were drawn into the Abhinav Bharat fold. They felt that the future of Hindus in the country was in jeopardy.

Lt. Col. Purohit and Dhawde were the key actors at the conspiracy stage. Sadhvi Pragnya offered logistics support. Her motorcycle was used in the blast and she offered to give two persons for the organisation. Dhawde, an arms connoisseur, who also ran a weapons museum, organised training in 2003.

Lt. Col. Purohit and Dhawde trained Ramji Kalsanghra and Sandeep Dange, the planters of the bomb, said Mr. Raghuvanshi. They are still absconding. The third absconder is Praveen Mutalik, a resident of Karnataka. He was with the bomb makers, Mr. Raghuvanshi said. He said Dwivedi and Dhawde had confessed to their involvement.

The ATS chief said the conspirators made Muslims the target of their terrorist activity. They wanted to bomb Muslim pockets, the 2008 Malegaon blast being the start. The place was chosen for two reasons. First, it was the month of Ramzan and Muslims gathered at mosques to offer prayers. Second, they thought that a bomb blast in 2006 executed by the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) would mislead the investigating agency, said Mr. Raghuvanshi.

In their pursuit of a ‘Hindu Rashtra,’ Lt. Col. Purohit and others planned to approach Israel for help if the need arose. However, Mr. Raghuvanshi said, no effort was made to contact the West Asian country. He said one could gather from some conversations that some suspects were in touch with Maoists in Nepal. However, the ATS investigation found no link of Maoists’ involvement.

The RDX used in the blast was procured by Lt. Col. Purohit at Dwivedi’s behest, said Mr. Raghuvanshi. The armyman procured it during his military posting in Jammu and Kashmir. He stored it in his house there; and in his houses in Pune and Nashik, where he was posted. The task of making the bomb was given to Sudhakar Chaturvedi in Nashik.

On Lt. Col. Purohit’s alleged link in the Samjhauta blast, Mr. Raghuvanshi said it came up only in the statement of one witness. “Our investigation has not revealed a link,” he said.

Charges

The accused have been charged under Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 326 and 324 (causing grievous hurt), 427 (damage up to Rs. 50), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code. Sections 3,4,5 of the Indian Arms Act and 3,4,5,6 of the Explosive Substances Act have been applied.

Malegaon blast: ATS chargesheet says Purohit main conspirator

20 Jan 2009, 1921 hrs IST, PTI

MUMBAI: Nearly four months after the blast at Malegaon, police have filed a chargesheet that named Army officer Lt Col Prasad Purohit as the main conspirator who provided the explosives, and Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur as the prime accused who arranged for the men who planted the explosives.

The 4,000-page chargesheet, filed by Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) before the Special MCOCA court here, stated that Purohit floated right wing group Abhinav Bharat in 2007 with an intention to "propagate a separate Hindu Rashtra with its own Constitution".

According to the document, the Army officer collected "huge amounts" to the tune of Rs 21 lakh for himself and Abhinav Bharat to promote his "fundamentalist ideology."

The amount was disbursed by Ajay Rahirkar, treasurer of the group, to various other accused to procure explosives for committing unlawful activities.

The conspiracy meetings were held from January 2008 at Faridabad, Bhopal, Kolkata, Bhopal, Jabalpur, Indore and Nashik.

At a meeting in Bhopal on April 11, 2008 Purohit took responsibility of providing explosives while the Sadhvi took the task of arranging for the men for exploding the bombs in the Muslim-dominated town in North Maharashtra.

Purohit had bought RDX with him when he returned from his Kashmir posting. He assembled the explosives at his residence in Pune with the help of co-accused Sudhakar Chaturvedi and wanted accused Ramji Kalsangra, and the same was used in the September 29 blast at Malegaon that killed six persons, it said

Malegaon blast: ATS chargesheet says Purohit main conspirator-India-The Times of India

Hey hindustanis, relax............. he is still the main accused!!!!

I think Hindustanis understood that the 'no evidence' part is only for Samjhauta. Only some Pakistanis are under the impression that his name is entirely cleared.

Samjauta blast accused? When was purohit accused in that case? There was a doubt when he was interogated under the Malegaon blasts. Thats it, nothing more.

As simple as that.

True to some extent, but not entirely.

Purohit did not launch an attack on Pakistani soil, so it would not be accurate to equate the Mumbai terror attacks and the Samjhauta blast.

Also worth noting is that Pakistan and the world did not have to arm-twist India into taking action.

This is correct. This investigation was launched entirely within India by Indian authorities based on the evidence collected. So far the said evidence links Purohit to the Malegaon blasts, not Samjhauta Express. The latter came about on account of hearsay which has since been promoted as an "established fact" in order to deflect the pressure from the Mumbai attacks.

Either way, this man committed a crime on Indian soil, which was investigated by the state's authorities who are now well on their way to build a very strong case against the accused on charges of murder, terrorism and espionage.

.
India must present strong evidence as to why it need not extradite Purohit to Pakistan. I am confident that India will never wipe out the evidence or resort to cheap fabricated evidence to vindicate Purohit. I am sure that India will live up to its reputation of largest democracy on the face of the planet.

It should be noted that investigations on Samjhuata and Malegaon cases started in India at the behest of it’s own quest for justice rather than compulsion.

I have seen too many accusations in this forum about muslims living in India. I would request our Pakistani friends to define the ‘miseries of muslims in India just because they are in India’ rather than buying into all the BS the media is selling. Please no Godhra, again, it was a nightmare for everybody. Nobody gives a s**t in India to know if the other guy is a muslim or a hindu or wotever. They have no time for religion. Nobody wears religion on their sleeve in India. Only exceptions are reported in the media and they do not exactly reflect the rules.
