No plan to build second aircraft carrier: China

Beijing: China, which commissioned its first aircraft carrier this week, has no immediate plans to build a second one, the defence ministry said on Thursday.

Chinese Defence Spokesman, Yang Yujun dismissed foreign media reports saying that China is building a second aircraft carrier in Shanghai which it plans to launch late this year. "Such reports are inaccurate," Yang was quoted as saying in a statement.

Asked about the reports that the navy will create an aircraft carrier formation in the future and build an aircraft carrier base in the eastern Chinese city of Qingdao, Yang said "the formation is generally made up of the aircraft carrier itself, escort vessels, submarines and aircraft."

Earlier reports in the official media here said China plans to build three aircraft carriers in the next few years to beef up its global naval presence.

Yang said China will plan the development of aircraft carriers in an all-round way, taking its national economic and social development and the needs of national defence and military construction into account.

China launched its first aircraft carrier 'Liaoning' on Tuesday, propelling its fast expanding navy's blue-water capability beyond its territorial waters at a time when the neighbourhood is witnessing high-voltage tensions in Sino-Japan ties.

The 60,000-tonne carrier Varyag, a former Soviet ship was bought from Ukraine and later refurbished locally, to install engines, weapons, as well as a year-long sea trial.

Yes, he only dismissed "China is building a second aircraft carrier in Shanghai which it plans to launch late this year". So no AC late this year, but, who know next year, haha.

.
Why hurry if you can start with latest technology installed ACC . If they wait for few years and introduce advance tech. like EMALS, then they n don't have to build a different ACC every single time as technologies emerge.

BTW I also doubt their claim, Chinese don't reveal such things.

.
A bit of double talk here. Why announced the Liaoning as a trainer carrier if China has no intention of building another one. What about the talks in the net two have already lay down.

.
China build some aircraft carriers otherwise what is the point of getting the Varyag along with it's blueprints?

. .
yeah just like varyag was supposed to be only a casino :D

. .
No no no you guys all wrong, the title is all wrong as well. China intended to name the Varyag number 16, that mean 15 more Aircraft carriers will come along. :)

No no everyone got it all wrong, from my reliable sources i was told the 2nd AC will be ready in 2060. So India, USA and VN call all relax and go to sleep no need to panic people. Oh by the way the 2nd AC will be a casino :D

According to huitong the 2nd aircraft carrier is under construction right now.

Apparently it's a conventional one with catapults.
It will be around 60,000 tons.

It will be unveiled late 2012 or 2013.

Eventually, 2 conventional carriers with catapults @ 60,000 tons will be built by 2015.

After that, 6 nuclear supercarriers with EMALS @ 100,000 tons will be built after 2015.

Steam catapult successfully tested a year ago。

Full-scale prototype EMALS under construction,funds allocated 11 months ago。

Marine nuclear reactor under development。

China is spoiled with choices。

So。。。conventional steam catapult?conventional EMALS?or nuclear powered EMALS?

Knowing how “prudent and conservative” China is,and considering the time factor,I'd go for “Kitty Hawk” for China's 1st indigenous CV,i.e. an 80000-ton displacement flat-top with steam-driven catapults。
