No new front to be opened: Kayani
Published: November 16, 2010
ISLAMABAD US Special Envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Halboorke, called on Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani at GHQ on Monday.
According to the ISPR, the visiting dignitary remained with the Chief of Army Staff for sometime and discussed the matters of mutual interest.
However, other sources informed TheNation that the US envoy discussed host of issues with the COAS including military operations against militants in Afghanistan, talks with Afghan Taliban, forthcoming NATO meeting in Lisbon and regional stability. The sources further said that General Kayani emphasised the need for political approach to resolve Afghan conflict and opposed the US drone strikes against the militants, as they were causing more collateral damage and negatively impacting the efforts against terrorists.
According to the sources, General Kayani briefed the US envoy about Pakistans efforts against the militants and made it clear that Pakistan would not open new front until it consolidated gains in the areas already recovered from the militants.
