No need to take your income abroad, invest here : PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Thursday urged the businesspeople to make more investment outside Dhaka and Chittagong. She emphasised flourishing more labour-intensive industries in the country, especially small and cottage industries.

She said labour cost is higher in Dhaka and Chittagong, and if investment is made outside these areas, the labour costs would be lesser, report agencies.

The Prime Minister came up with the remarks when the newly-elected Board of Directors of the Federation of the Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FBCCI) met her at her office. FBCCI president Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed led the delegation.

"You will surely do business. However, you have to think about the nation. There is no need to take your income abroad. We want huge domestic investment as well as foreign investment," she said.

She said her government has taken all the necessary measures to spread investment from northern to southern part of the country to create more employment opportunities.

Citing her government's stance for giving more attention to the private sector to propel the country's economy, Hasina mentioned that it was her previous government which had welcomed power plants in the private sector as well as private TV channels, banks and insurance companies.

Mentioning the government's initiatives to set up seven special economic zones in seven divisions, Hasina said: "We want more local investments, so that the money remains in the country."

Regarding the non-compliance in mills and factories, especially in the wake of some recent devastating fire incidents, she said that the owners of the mills and factories should have to give proper attention to ensure proper working environment and compliance. "Your protection system should be taken by yourself."

Urging the business community to pay their taxes properly, Hasina said, "If so, our revenue earnings will get a boost and we'll be able to render our services more efficiently. You please don't keep pour money abroad, but invest that in the country."

In this regard, the Prime Minister mentioned that the present government had brought the Prime Minister, cabinet members, MPs and government officials under the income tax net except the honorable President to encourage the taxpayers.

About the demand of the FBCCI leaders for uninterrupted power and gas supply in the industries, she said steps were taken to construct 54 power plants over the last four years apart from signing agreement for construction of nuclear power plant. Very soon power will be imported from India, she said.

She said the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has already approved five projects for constructing power and gas transmission lines in the country.

Immediate-past FBCCI president AK Azad, 1st vice president Monowara Hakim Ali, vice president Md. Helal Uddin, among others, spoke on the occasion.

I feel like two rakahs namaz (salah) after hearing this news.

1. Bangladeshi is Dhaka-centric and Dhaka is falling apart.

Bangladesh must therefore allocate other industries, departments and sources of employment, economic activity and space for urban immigration to other cities/places.

2. I know finance minister Muhith said this, and now the article confirms that Hasina is aware of this issue too.

This is something that Bangladesh must do.

After Dhaka, the next main city is Chittagong. The government can then facilitate investment and job creation in Khulna, Sylhet etc.

The poorest parts of Bangladesh are the west and north and they need urgent help.

Hope they get the investors to listen too it.But as long as there is instability they'll be discouraged to invest in the country.And if they want to invest outside of Dhaka and Chittagong they'll need better transport communication system then the one's we already have.

Dhaka is situated almost at the center of Bangladesh. Establishing industries, employment, economic activity in Dhaka helps all the region if concentrate Chittagong north bangle will be at disadvantage. If Concentrate on Khulna, people of Sylhet will be at disadvantage etc. So near Dhaka will be better choice.
