No likelihood of war with China but India must strengthen its defence

AMRITSAR: While discounting the possibility of Indo-China war, former Indian army chief and Governor, Arunachal Pardesh General (Retd) JJ Singh said that Indian must keep modernizing and strengthening its defense mechanism as a a formidable 'deterrent'.

Singh was here to attend the 107th annual Convocation of historic Khalsa College Amritsar (KCA).

He said Budhism, "the religion of peace traveled from India to China and there exists ample opportunity that India and China resolve border issues peacefully but India must stay prepared for any eventuality. He said the present century belonged to Asia so China and India must work together as most powerful nations of this continent.

"We have shared history of peaceful co-existence despite border tensions in 1960s. There are ample opportunities that issues pending are resolved peacefully," said Singh.

Quoting that 'strength begets respect' he however said that the ongoing modernization of Indian defense forces must continue with full vigor. He said China and Pakistan must also understand that 'patience' of India was not its 'weakness' as the country was capable of defending its borders.

Singh also stressed on modernization of education and female literacy. "If we teach girls they would be educated mothers and create an aware society to the benefit of mankind," said he but at the same time he also expressed expressed concerns over rising trend of drugs addiction in Punjab, especially in border areas and sought corrective measures from government and society itself through awareness regarding the menace. He gave away 450 degrees to College students.

Our disputes are diplomatic ones. We have not had any bloodshed with any neighbouring country for over 30 years.

India on the other hand regularly has bloodshed on both the Pakistani and Bangladeshi borders. Just two days ago there was another cross-border killing, and only one month ago there were multiple beheadings and mutilations of soldiers.

Surely having diplomatic disputes is much better than regular cross-border killings and bloodshed?

Would like to know your opinion if you have a neighbor sending terrorists to city in Shanghai like Mumbai and killing 166 people or insurgency in Xinjiang region like Kashmir which claimed over 70,000 lives while rest of the world watched in silence and they carried out their holy war.

Just imagine you in our position. You will have your answer. We don't want war with China. We want economic development and bringing end to poverty, illiteracy, etc.

China is a trade partner and relations are getting better and we want to keep it this way.
