The representative clarified that the army is only working to improve the law and order situation.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – A representative of General Headquarters while briefing the Senate Standing Committee said that Pakistan Army has no connection with the General Elections 2018.

He clarified that the army is only working on the directions of Election Commission to improve the law and order situation in the country.

"We do not have a direct role in the polls. Armed forces have always provided support to civil departments," added the representative.

“Army is also performing duty at the printing press. At least 3,71,000 personnel will be deployed at the polling stations,” he further said.

PML-N Senator Kulsoom Parveen inquired about the number of troops being deployed in Balochistan. The GHQ representative replied, “We have analysed all the places in terms of security. Leave the planning to us. We know how many troops have to be deployed where. We have made the deployed as per requirement.”

He further said, “There is no problem in mutual communication. Unfortunately we also have to perform the duty of police until the improvement of their abilities.”

“We have to work according to ECP’s code of conduct. At the time Afghan elections, we took extraordinary measures at this side of the border. Afghan president has assured the prime minister and Army chief of his cooperation in a telephone call. For us, the life of every citizen is precious,” asserted the representative.

The meeting headed by committee chairperson Senator Rehman Malik was also attended by Nacta coordinator, Inspector Generals of all four provinces, home secretaries, federal interior secretary, defense secretary and secretary Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

Fateha was offered for the martyrs of Peshawar and Mastung blast at the beginning of the session.

Chairman of committee Rehman Malik while condemning the attacks said that the nation is saddened over the martyrdom of Haroon Bilour and Siraj Raisani.

YOU CANNOT CHANGE TITLE OF THE NEWS or MALIGN PAKISTANI FORCES. We hear no $hit on this subject. If you are not supporting PMLN, correct the title and render and apology here to the PDF members for your angled comments against Pakistan Army.
Regardless of which party do we support, we cannot malign the role of our institutions and we have to be ultra careful and vigilant under this charged up atmosphere when enemies are spreading all sorts of disinformation and resorting to terrorism to sabotage the elections..that would be the last thing to create a chasm between the army and the nation.
I urge people of Pakistan, that if you love Pakistan, pave the way for a strong government because Pakistan will face a lot challenges it has not faced before....economy, threats on borders, terrorism, international affairs.
Our loans stand at the highest in the history of the nation, the situation in Afghanistan is getting worse and I foresee instability at middle-eastern scale in Afghanistan. That's the time when the civilian and non-civilians have to be united.
NS has done a lot of damage to the country and made it prone to external threats as never before.

Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor attends Senate's standing committee on interior on Thursday. — DawnNewsTV

Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor on Thursday, reiterating his stance from a press conference held earlier this month, rejected the notion that the security forces have any direct role in how the July 25 elections will unfold.

Speaking at the special session of the Senate Standing Committee on Interior, DG ISPR clarified that the army personnel are only following the Election Commission of Pakistan's instructions.

"There were some rumours that army personnel had been issued 'different' orders — this is completely baseless," he said. "We do not have any link with the elections; we are only working on the election commission's directives to improve the law and order situation. We do not have a direct role in polls."

Major General Ghafoor then elaborated the election duty assigned to army personnel, saying: "The armed forces have always lent support to civil institutions. The security situation is being improved in the entire country to hold elections.

"Three hundred and seventy one thousand army soldiers will be deployed at the countrywide polling stations. The army is also performing its duty at the printing press [for ballots]."

When asked by PML-N Senator Kulsoom Parveen to disclose the number of troops being deployed in Balochistan — where a suicide blast at a political event killed around 150 people — the DG ISPR said: "Leave the planning side to us; we know how many troops have to be deployed where. We have analysed every place from a security point of view. We have made deployments as per the need in Balochistan."

Maj Gen Ghafoor, however, made it clear that the army's role in providing security for elections did not mean that it would also take direct responsibility for the well being of politicians.

"The army is not taking direct responsibility for the security of any politician," he said. "The security of political candidates is the responsibility of the government of Pakistan and the ECP. We are assisting the election commission for security during polling.

"Unfortunately, until the police's abilities improve, we will also have to do police duty."

Speaking of coordination with Afghanistan, the ISPR spokesperson said that Pakistan has been assured of reciprocal support from the Afghan side on the security front. "When the elections took place in Afghanistan, we took extraordinary measures on this side of the border. This time, the Afghan president phoned Pakistan prime minister and the army chief to assure us of their cooperation."

The Senate session was presided over by the committee chairperson Senator Rehman Malik. Federal interior and defence secretaries, secretary ECP and several other government officials were also present in the meeting.

Army personnel will work under the presiding officer: ECP secretary
In the same session, ECP Secretary Babar Yaqoob also briefed the Senate body over the army's electoral duties among other things.

"A total of 800,000 security officials and 700,000 ECP staff will perform their duties," he said. "Bearing in mind the events of 2013, the ECP took the decision to deploy army. We are grateful to the army. Their officers are also being trained. The army's help was also obtained to keep a watch on ballot papers."

Yaqoob denied that army personnel would have a free role at the polling stations. "A perception has been given that the army personnel would have a free role — this is wrong," he said. "The army personnel will work under the presiding officer at polling stations."

Senator Javed Abbasi asked whether army is deployed inside and outside [the polling stations] in other countries as well. To this, the ECP secretary said that the decision was taken in the light of "the security situation of our country and the threats coming to the polling stations according to the Nacta (National Counter Terrorism Authority Pakistan) briefing".

"So we would obviously have asked the army and police to improve security," he added

no direct but only indirect role :buba_phone:

Again it's not deliberately "chosen". It's on Frontpage of many newspaper already. We need to come out of pmln / ppp propaganda that establishment is meddling in elections. I have posted some sarcastic threads to fiddle out this but apparently some people didn't understand and thought I had switched sides

It's exactly what I said :enjoy:

Yes you might be correct but I doubt it any way I have no authority to judge you. I will play my part to counter the propaganda. Your very post on a Pakistani Defence forum shows there is no army restriction and melding and silencing the media so it proves that Army is not involved in Media block out and election meddling.

.
If the Pakistani Armed forces are not involved in this election, then they are fools.

The Pakistani society knows no ethics, has no ethics and isn't willing to learn about ethics. In such a scenario, the only way to prevent total chaos and nafsa-nafsi is to use the biggest stick in the land.

There are other armies that are very definitely involved. Don't sleep walk into another disaster.

How Sad. I call this prejudice by the army. How unfair. Look what the army did for others -

  • Bhutto handpicked by military regime of Gen. Ayub Khan.
  • Nawaz Sharif handpicked by military regime of Gen. Zia.
  • Altaf placed in power of Karachi by military regime of Gen. Musharaf.

Not fair, not fair ....................... !
