No ammo, air defence obsolete: Army Chief to PM

i bet he is lying no sane person would ever reveal such things he is just asking for increase in budget give him a break. i guess he is too old for duty anyway

then he has gone mad.................we had $36 billion military budget last year and we could utilise only 70% of it.........this year it is above $40 billion...........what will we do with more increase..............plan a military raid to conquer mars???

. .
get rid off this old guy asap

Why? Are you upset he is exposing the coruption that is rife with India?

this is exactly my point.. who was stopping him to state all these things much earlier.....

messenger with bad timing is bad messenger.....

What do you think. The SOB is corrupt also to some degree. At least being hounded by the gov;t, we finally get the truth. The reality is that corruption has been ingrained in our entire govt. wht the fuk do you think they do not want to pass Anna Hazare Lok Pal? I don;t think Anna's points are perfect but hell there has to be some major implementation of it. For example, no one with a criminal background can contest. That would help don;t you think.

Regardless of being a bad messenger, we should stop attacking him and listen to the bloody msg. Its th same issue with the nuclear energy protestors. Do we seriously think corruption is not evident in this industry either?

Leaked Letter Reveals India's Military Weaknesses
NEW DELHI, March 28, 2012 (AFP) -India's tank fleet lacks ammunition, its air defences are "97 percent obsolete" and its elite forces lack essential arms, the country's army chief wrote in an explosive letter leaked Wednesday.
The letter to the prime minister dated March 12 -- widely reported by the Indian media -- lists the shortcomings of the armed forces in embarrassing detail in a blow to the government and the Asian giant's military prestige.
Its publication also ups the stakes in a public battle between army chief General V.K. Singh and the government which began with a dispute over Singh's retirement earlier this year.
"The state of the major (fighting) arms i.e. mechanised forces, artillery, air defence, infantry and special forces, as well as the engineers and signals, is indeed alarming," Singh wrote in the letter, DNA newspaper reported.
The army's entire tank fleet is "devoid of critical ammunition to defeat enemy tanks", while the air defence system is "97% obsolete and it doesn't give the deemed confidence to protect... from the air," he wrote, according to DNA.
The infantry is crippled with "deficiencies" and lacks night fighting equipment, while the elite special forces are "woefully short" of "essential weapons".
Singh also told The Hindu newspaper this week that he had informed Defence Minister A.K Antony of a $2.8 million bribe offered to him in 2010, leading to embarrassing questions as to why the government did not order an enquiry.
Antony told parliament on Wednesday that he was aware of the letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and he would reply appropriately.

New Delhi: Hours after a leaked letter of Army Chief General VK Singh highlighted the lack of preparedness of the armed forces, Defence Minister AK Antony assured Parliament that the government is committed to ensuring the safety and security of the nation.

“I wish to assure the House and through it the nation that the government is determined to do all that is necessary to ensure the safety and security of the nation,” Antony told Rajya Sabha.

The government is committed to getting best equipment for the armed forces, Antony said, adding it is equally concerned about speeding up the modernisation process and strengthening defence preparedness to ensure national security.

As regards the issue of the Army Chief making confidential issues public, Antony told the House that he will take appropriate action after talking to the Prime Minister.

Making a secret letter public is harmful, the minister admitted.

The Opposition also demanded an enquiry into the matter, saying action should be taken against the person who leaked the letter.

Leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley of the BJP said alarmist situation is being created due to leaked secret reports.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh earlier today held a high-level meeting on the Army Chief’s letter. The meeting was attended by Antony, Home Minister P Chidambaram and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

The meeting came amidst demands from a section of the Congress party and the Opposition that the Army Chief be sacked for making confidential matters public.

In his letter written to the PM on March 12, the Army Chief had stated that the country’s security might be at risk owing to the fact that tanks are running out of ammunition, air defence is going obsolete and the infantry is operating without critical weapons.

Meanwhile, addressing concerns raised over the procurement process, Antony told Rajya Sabha that the government has been continuously tightening loose ends in the procurement process.

The government has blacklisted companies and cancelled contracts whenever corruption has come to light in procurement process.

New Delhi: Some political leaders are demanding that the government dismiss the army chief, General VK Singh. A letter from him to the Prime Minister, citing huge deficiencies in the army's equipment, was leaked to the media. This has become what many believe is the breaking point in a heavily-frayed relationship between the General and the government. Here are 10 big developments:

1) New flashpoint after letter by Army Chief to Prime Minister is leaked to media. Dated March 12, the letter says that Army is constrained by out-dated technology, air defence "is 97% obsolete" and army tanks are "devoid of critical ammunition to defeat enemy tanks"

2) Government believes Army Chief's office responsible for leak. Defence Minister lashes out in Parliament, says these should not be matters of public debate. He said publishing "secret communication within government cannot serve our national security."

3) Opposition leaders agree. Left's Sitaram Yechury says government must identify the person responsible for the leak. He says "responsibility will have to be fixed and action be taken...irrespective of the position they may hold in the defence forces or the civilian administration. " Shivanand Tiwari of Janta Dal (United) says, Army chief should be "removed from his post" for inappropriate behaviour. Lalu Prasad Yadav says the army chief has begun talking like someone who wants to contest elections and must be dismissed. Ram Gopal Yadav of the Samajawadi Party says General Singh "is talking too much."

4) Prime Minister meets Defence Minister, Pranab Mukherjee and P Chidambaram this morning. They brief him about the letter that has been leaked as well as the other huge controversy born from the army chief's disclosure that he was offered a bribe of 14 crores in 2010.

5) The Defence Minister said in Parliament yesterday that the Army chief had told him that a retired officer, Lt General Tejinder Singh had visited him in 2010 and offered him a kickback. The minister said he asked the Army chief to take action, but General Singh said he did not want to pursue the matter.

6) In an interview on Tuesday, General Singh had tried to explain why the offer of the bribe did not prompt any action from him other than passing on the information to the Defence Minister. "It was not like he was giving me bribe in my hand. This was an indirect method and that is why no arrest was made," he said yesterday.

7) Tejinder Singh has sued the Army chief for defamation. He says that though he visited the Army chief in September 2010, he did not offer him any money. He says he asked the Army chief to consider making him the chief of the NTRO or National Technical Research Organisation, a highly specialised technical intelligence gathering agency. General Singh's supporters point out he did not sanction that appointment.

8) Tejinder Singh was accused by the army earlier this month of offering bribers on behalf of Tatra and Vetra which supply the Army with trucks used to transport artillery and troops. The General has described the trucks as "sub-standard" in an interview this week.

9) Documents with NDTV show that Tatra trucks are over-priced- they cost 40-50 lakhs in Europe but 7000 of them were bought by the army at double that price. The trucks were sold via a defence public sector unit, BEML. Several analysts say that they have performed poorly.

10) Army chief scheduled to retire at end of May. He became first serving military chief to take government to court. He wanted the government to accept that he was born in 1951 and not 1950. Army records show both, but the government says that his seniority and promotions have been based on 1950 as his year of birth, and that records cannot be amended now. General Singh withdrew his petition against the government after the Supreme Court indicated it would not agree with his arguments. The General was widely criticised for turning his differences with the government into a public battle. He said he was fighting to defend his honour and integrity.
