Nigeria authorities arrest 45 Chinese nationals

KANO, Nigeria: Nigeria immigration officials say they've arrested 45 Chinese nationals working in a popular northern market and plan to deport them.

Kano state immigration controller Emmanuel Brasca Udo Ifeadi said on Tuesday that the Chinese workers were arrested at a textile market in the city. Ifeadi described the workers as "economic scavengers" who were undercutting Nigerian sellers in the market.

Nigeria's own textile factories collapsed in the 1980s over cheap imports, many coming from China. Many Chinese now live in Nigeria, working in a variety of fields as the country partners with government on large-scale projects like rehabilitating the nation's railroad system and roadways.

One of the stowaways claimed to have paid US$3,000 for his passage to the United States, but investigators say smuggling fees for migrants from China typically range from US$30,000 to US$60,000, according to immigration agents.

LOL most of the comments on that article are downright racist. It doesn't give a good impression. This is Nigeria we are talking about here, and Africa is always known to expel successful Asians time and again. Indians had it alot worse in Uganda, I believe there were other Asian communities in other places. You sure it's not racially motivated.

Africans keep making the wrong choices. They still refuse to plug into the rest of the world and would rather stick out. It won't do any good for their growth.

2.4 lakh illegal Indian immigrants living in U.S.: report

An estimated 2,40,000 Indian immigrants are among 11.5 million foreigners living illegally in the United States without proper immigration documents, according to latest official figures.

The flow of Indians coming clandestinely to the U.S. has, in fact, doubled between 2000 and 2011, said the latest report by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

During the same period the total number of illegal foreign immigrants increased from 8.46 million to 11.51 million.

India with 2,40,000 illegal immigrants ranks seventh in the list which is topped by Mexico with 6.8 million followed by El Salvador (6,60,000), Guatemala (5,20,000) and Honduras (3,80,000).
