Is AK2 supposed to be the next upgraded version of AK1 and still the low end(to be made in numbers) with Oplot(or VT4, whichever gets picked) being the high end?Dilemma. AK production rate doesn't meet requirements, redundant tanks which can't be used in modern armoured warfare, form about 16 regiments in our Armd Corps, and the new acquisitions can't get decided as both VT4 and Oplot have failed first trials here. Don't know how the VT4 did this time but another tank type induction in short term will cause severe logistical issues.
We have to streamline our variety in armour, seeing the mess we possess, it's going to be pretty hard when the army will face large scale manouver ops with limited supplies in wartime.
I say we should pour in the cash to boost the AK-1 production rate, convert more T59 units into AZ and if needed disband a few units or transfer to reserves like the IA has done with it's T55s. AK-2 project should be taken seriously, just do what we did with MBT-2000 to MBT-3000 (VT4).
But this is long term, not urgent, and we have to focus on improving the overall fleet quality, reducing the logistical burden and making the AC leaner yet more effective. When a third of the Corps is at quality of infantry support ops only, these measures are necessary.
Or is Pak getting only a small number of Oplot(or VT4) and AK1/AK2 combo will serve as high/low?
Can anyone please shed some light on this? Right now between Al-Zarrar, Al-Khalid, T80UD, older tanks, and this new Oplot/VT4 acquisition...it seems too fragmented. Anyone know the future plans of streamlining this mess?
