You can tell me a lot about China, but you can not tell me anything about China's HPC program. I follow the HPC scene, and am well versed with HPC developments. I know China's plans for their HPC development.

There will be three prototypes by 2017-18.

One based on Shenwei Chips, one based on ARM chips, one based on something.

One will go exascale by 2020.

A model machine of a supercomputer capable of at least a billion calculations per second will be finished by the end of next year, making it the first supercomputer to reach the highest level of independent research and development nationwide by far, Liu Guangming, director of the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin, said on Monday.

"The new-era exascale supercomputer is noted for its independent development, including chip for computer and operating system and computing environment of work," Liu said.

The research and development for the prototype has began earlier this month.

"The work of first stage aims to overcome major technical difficulties, which will lead to promotion of computing density and calculation ability of single chip and communication rate of internal data," Liu added.

Some key components, involving CPU and a high-speed interconnection communication and operating system, developed in China independently, will also come into use in the process of developing the model machine.

This high performance computer, named Tianhe-3, will begin operating by 2020 when the research and development work is done.

According to the plan, the government of Tianjin Binhai New Area, the National University of Defense Technology and the National Supercomputing Center are working together on the project.

China's research for its first exascale computer has entered a crucial phase. Scientists led by the National Research Center of Parallel Computer Engineering & Technology (NRCPC) are researching the core processor of a prototype exascale computing system.

Meng Xiangfei, Applications Department head of the National Supercomputer Center of China, said in an interview with Xinhua that the prototype will likely be released in 2018.

If successfully realized, the supercomputer will work at a speed of more than 1,000 PFlops, 10 times faster than the current fastest supercomputer in the world. That computer, China’s Sunway TaihuLight, works at a peak speed of 125 PFlops. The new machine’s processing power will also greatly propel research in aerospace, materials science and meteorology.

Many of the computer's facets, including its CPU, high-speed Internet communications system and operating system, are original technologies that were developed domestically.

Liang Jun, vice director of NRCPC, said that their research project will serve to verify the viability of exascale computer technologies. Since none have been built before, there are lingering uncertainties about the efficiency, reliability, energy cost and application of computers with exabyte levels of storage. In the next several years, Chinese computer scientists will work hard to explore the possibilities of exascale computers.

Billion billion calculations per second: where no computer has gone before

China joins the race to build the first exascale computer by 2020, or before

China has started to develop its first exascale computer capable of performing a billion billion calculations per second, as the country steps up efforts to stay in the lead of the global supercomputer race.

The high-performance computer, if it can be built by 2020, will boost the country’s scientific capability and possibly maintain its prestige of housing the world’s fastest calculating system.

The exascale supercomputer will operate at 1,000 petaflops, or quadrillion calculations per second, 10 times the speed of China’s TaihuLight, which topped a 2016 global supercomputer speed list.

With an official goal to put an exascale computer into service in five years, the Ministry of Science and Technology recently funded three research institutions to develop prototypes, Xinhua said.

When these are completed, the ministry will pick two teams with the best designs to build the fully-functioning exascale supercomputer, said An Hong, a computer scientist at the University of Science and Technology of China.

An, who has been training Chinese researchers to use supercomputers, said existing machines still failed to provide the speeds required to study new materials, develop drugs and design nuclear power plants.

“The demand in computing speed has no limits,” An said. “Now we have the money and technology, we can build better computers for scientists to use.”

The top tech enterprise Sugon, which built the Dawning supercomputers, was the first to kick off the exascale computer project, Xinhua reported.

The National University of Defence Technology, which is under the direct leadership of the Central Military Commission, joined the competition in October, aiming to finish the prototype by early 2018. The military academy developed the former world champion Tianhe-2 supercomputer.

This week, the National Research Centre of Parallel Computer Engineering and Technology, which developed TaihuLight, started work on its new machine.

This year, China displaced the US for the first time as the country with the most supercomputers in TOP500. China had 167 systems to the Americans’ 165.

Japan and France are also aiming to develop exascale systems by 2020, while the US will have its own by 2023.
