As the relationship between the United States and Pakistan continues to deteriorate, signs of a formidable axis in Central Asia emerges.

In an interview with the Financial Times published on Sunday, Pakistan's defense minister Khurram Dastgir Khan said his country was undergoing a "regional recalibration" of its "foreign and security policy."

Part of that regional recalibration involves Pakistan reaching out to Russia and China for new military supplies.

“The fact that we have recalibrated our way towards better relations with Russia, deepening our relationship with China, is a response to what the Americans have been doing," he said.

Khan's comments come three weeks after Beijing revealed it would build an offshore naval base near Gwadar Port in the Pakistani province of Balochistan.

Earlier this month, the Trump administration announced it would cut all security aid to Pakistan because the country has failed to undermine terrorist networks within its borders.

"The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than $33 billion in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies and deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools," President Donald Trump tweeted on January 1.

"They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!"

Khan, who has served as Pakistan's defense minister since August 2017, said Trump's comments were “deeply offensive” and “counterproductive."

Immediately after Trump's disparaging tweet, both Beijing and Moscow issued strong statements in support of Pakistan.
"We must value Pakistan's important role on the Afghanistan issue, and respect Pakistan's sovereignty and reasonable security concerns," China's top diplomat Yang Jiechi told Secretary of State Rex Tillerson over the phone, according to Chinese media.

Russia's envoy to Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov echoed Jiechi's remarks, telling reporters that pressuring Pakistan "may seriously destabilize the region-wide security situation and result in negative consequences for Afghanistan," adding that Russia views Pakistan as “a key regional player to negotiate with.”

Islamabad had already begun pivoting towards China and Russia before Trump's January tweet.

In April 2017, Pakistan's foreign minister Khawaja Asif said his country should begin to diplomatically move away from the U.S. and align itself with its powerful neighbors.

“China lives next to us and we have a common wall,” Asif told a seminar in Islamabad, broadcaster Dawn News reported. “Russia can also be our good friend.”

. . .
Pakistan should have established strong relations with Russia and China (especially with Russia since Pak-China relations are already very strong) regardless of its relations with USA.... Our policies should be based on long term interests and not on knee-jerk reaction to some midnight tweet or a few statement or suspension of funds....so what does it mean that if USA resumes the aid tomorrow, will we go running back to uncle sam with our tail wiggling and tongue out? and what message we are conveying to Russia that we are now on your door step to procrastinate because USA has suspended our aid....what will the Russians think? But what can we expect from these incompetent traitors and idiots.

Rather, we should have strengthened our ties based on the alignment of our geopolitical interests. Interests of Pakistan and USA are antithetical and both will move farther and farther away from each other in future so we should rather be grateful to Donald Trump that he has removed the last veil of hypocrisy that the sell outs in our establishment used to fool the nation and kept the country enslaved to uncle sam more than it was even asked for.

Post-USSR Russia and Pakistan's mutual interests converge on more than one key geo-strategic points. From JF-17's engine to larger global and regional situations...

BTW, the retards who advocate for USA, should ask themselves why JF17 uses a Russian engine and not an American one?

What kind of idiot openly states foreign policy for everyone to see. And how on Earth can China be our only friend?? In the age of multi dimensional international relationships??

Russia and China can be our friends. They can support us in need yes....
But don't you think a nation which boast of being a nuclear power is looking for countries to be dependable upon...
It's high time we start relying on ourselves..
Only if we take certain small steps towards reform we can achieve self independence. Only then we can enter as an equal in alliance with our friends china and Russia.

russia is the same soviet union.don't consider them weak.they are the best army of this world.america is just sick of russia and china because america just can't destroy them.this axis is dangerous for india who is now trusting america rather than russia.russia don't like growing relations of india with america and specially naval activities of america in this region.we can survive any war if we have good neighbors and it requires diplomacy.pakistan is situated in an incredible place and gwadar and karachi port, both are blessings.

Its not a hidden secret of any kind. When two people start to meet up more and do business and trade, it shows from their actions. Making that a policy statement looks much better as it comes across to the remainder of a globe, as a nation's united voice. That is why you build policies. Otherwise, it would be a mere statement.

Pakistan like any other country in the world has all the rights to make friends with whoever they want to. In terms of your post of having the "only friend", its actually true. You can be friends with everyone, but your strategic friends will be only one and two. The US used to have Israel and Europe (NATO). Now its really, US, India and Israel. NATO business seems to have slowed down since Obama left.

I partially agree with you but to be realistic, in this world, you need support of other countries especially the power players. Look at your neighbour in the east, 6 times bigger in population, 4 times bigger in area and boasting huge economy but still needs these crutches and imports far more weapons than Pakistan even in percentage terms so there is no harm in importing high quality products from friendly nations but the focus should be to produce as much stuff locally as possible and also export it.
But relations with other countries have much deeper and tangible reasons than getting the weapons only. You need trade, diplomatic support and scientific and technical exchange.
