NEWS FLASH: Gunman Kills at Least 30 on Virginia Tech Campus

Not trying to insult anyone who died or anyone who was affected by this horrible incident, but I don't see why I should care about this more than the other people dying because of violence like this (Iraq, etc) and why if.. lets say 5 people get killed in the US or UK then it gets more coverage then if 5 people die in somewhere like Africa or Asia.

CHENNAI: Nine family members of G.V. Loganathan, Viriginia Tech professor, who was among the 32 killed in Monday's shooting on the university campus, will leave for the United States in the early hours of Thursday.

The State Government, the U.S. Consulate in Chennai and the Regional Passport Office helped them to get flight tickets, visas and passports in record time.

The family, including his parents, will board a Lufthansa flight to Washington, from where they will be taken to Virginia by a chartered flight arranged by the university, G.V. Palanivel, Mr. Loganathan's brother, told The Hindu on Wednesday.

It took hardly an hour for the Regional Passport Office authorities here to issue passports to the family members under the Tatkal scheme.

Sumathi Ravichandran, Regional Passport Officer, Chennai, said the professor's father and mother — G.K.Vasudevan (78) and V. Kannammal (70) — brother, G.V. Sengottuvelavan (46), and sister-in-law, S. Sentamilselvi (36), did not have passports.

As a special gesture, the passport authorities waived the `Tatkal' fee.

All four were issued passports, which would be valid for the next 10 years.

The RPO authorities blocked tickets in two airlines on Wednesday night. Ms. Ravichandan said the State Government had announced that it would bear the airfare for all the nine members.

"On Tuesday evening, I spoke to the family members and told them about the papers to be submitted while applying for a passport.

They submitted the application around 10 a.m. and by 11 a.m. they got their passports," she said.

In the recent past, the passport office had not issued passports so fast, she added.

Normally, relatives who wished to go abroad for performing the final rites applied in the morning and got their passports in the evening.

Special gesture

The U.S. Consulate also expedited the issue of travel visas to the family. "We extended all practical assistance to the family to make the process quick and smooth," David T. Hopper, U.S. Consul-General in Chennai, told reporters.

At the visa section, Loganathan's parents broke down when they were asked to introduce themselves.

Earlier in the day, the State Government promised that it would foot the bill for the travel and make all arrangements for their travel to the U.S.

Responding to a special calling attention motion, Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy said that Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had deputed an officer to get all clearances and had ensured that they received their passports and visas without delay. Representatives of all political parties and the Speaker condoled the death of the professor.

Its not just US news channels. They obviously do it the most but also news channels and websites from other countries also tend to give such incidents more importance if they happen in US or UK or some country like that compared to if these incidents happen in a developing country.
