Chittagong: BNS Bijoy, a newly procured navy ship from United Kingdom (UK), arrived at Chittagong Naval Jetty on Friday.

BNS Bijoy is a modern castle class warship named as HMS Dumburton in British Royal Navy.

This ship was engaged for patrolling as a guard ship in the South Atlantic Sea, Falkland Islands and around of South Georgia before procured by Bangladesh Navy, said a release of ISPR.

The ship was officially handed over to Bangladesh Navy on May 14, 2010 at Portsmouth, UK.

Later, necessary modernization works of the ship were done in UK and finally Commanding Officer of the ship Captain Syed Ariful Islam, BN started their journey to Bangladesh on November 22, 2010.

The ship cruised 16 thousand km in her way to Bangladesh.

On the way, it anchored at Tanjir port of Morocco, Port Limasol of Cyprus, Port Syed of Egypt, Port Jeddah of Saudi Arabia and Colombo of Sri Lanka for welcome visit and purchasing fuel and rations.

Two procurement treaties were signed between Bangladesh and UK government for BNS Bijoy and BNS Dhaleshwary on April 15, 2010 which can be marked as a significant step for modernizing Bangladesh Navy taken by ruling government.

BNS Dhaleshawry is expected to join Bangladesh Navy Fleet in February this year.:angel::angel:

The Castle Class offshore patrol vessels were purchased by the Bangladesh Navy from the Royal Navy in 2010 for $2 million each. Before being transferred they were refitted at A&P Tyne under a three month multi-million pound upgrade program. Sixty-six crew members of the Bangladesh Navy also received training on the operation and maintenance of the vessels.

The upgrade project includes the overhaul of the vessel’s main engines, gearboxes, shafts and motors, the installation of new diesel generators and deck cranes and an upgrade of the crew’s accommodation.

BNS Dhaleshwari (Leeds Castle, P258) and BNS Bijoy (Dumbarton Castle, P265) are currently the largest offshore patrol vessels in the Bangladesh Navy and are the only patrol vessels with the distinction of accomadating helicopters as they are equipped with large flight decks. They are classified as 'corvettes' in service with the Bangladesh Navy.

These warships are part of FSG 25 squadron, which is the Bangladesh Navy's first corvette unit. It has been said that the Bangladesh Navy is planning to equip these warships with anti-ship missile launchers in the future.

A helicopter deck is the most important feature of these two corvettes. The speed of these corvettes is only 12 kt. On deck helicopters will enlarge their operational range by many hundred km. With the addition of new missile system in the future, the two corvettes will play a great role to protect our sea wealths from the encroachment of our two greedy neighbours.

For one, its NOT a corvette. Its a patrol vessels :D

And pray how does having a helicopter increase the operational range? The heli still needs to return to the vessel and the vessel can only travel at its given speed, which is merely 12 knots. So even if the heli detects an intruder, unless the intruder is not a small fishing boat, there is not much the vessel can do. These vessels are used mainly for coastal defense.

You are right that these are basically castle class offshore patrol boats. But, BD navy has upgraded it with many new equipments and will add a missile sytem in each. BD Navy has reclassified them 'Corvettes'. Please refer to the post #2 to know about this.

Do we know what anti-ship missile they are planning to induct?

People talk about adding a missile system like it is something done very easily. You need to almost cut open the hull and install it in such a way that you dont disturb the CoG of the vessel.

Corvettes are classified into:
1. Guided missile corvettes
2. ASW Corvettes.

These are the principle brown water naval ships. Unlike the Frigates they do not carry much sensors and have a smaller command structure. They can perform only one role at a time.

These ships are larger than the FACs but smaller than the anti-ship frigates.

Bangladesh can better go for the F 22p class frigates from china instead of buying and modifying second hand off-shore patrol vessels like these.

But i guess the BN knows what is best for them.
