New Tesla Battery Could Take Your Home Off The Grid

Tesla Motors are out to change the world – and they’re doing it fast, and in style. Like many other of their projects, this one seemed to pop up out of nowhere: Tesla have designed a battery that can power your home and even larger utility buildings. In other words – it could take your house out of the grid.

When dealing with electric cars and even renewable energy, storing energy is one of the major problems – the difficulties and costs in storing solar or wind energy are part of the reason why most people stay on the grid, using conventional energy; enter the stage Tesla. The new battery they designed, and which according to founder and chief executive Elon Musk will be unveiled in a month or two, promises to not only be an efficient way to store energy, but also a way to save money.

“It’s really great. I’m really excited about it,” Musk said in February. Mass production could be only six months away, he added. He also stated that the battery will feature a chique design which will blend into any home design.

While there is no word on the price yet, this innovation is not only aimed at the eco-friendly homeowner. These batteries could be a huge benefit for those living in areas where grid power is unreliable due to power outages – basically replacing generators. But for the millions of people frustrated with their energy providers, this may finally be a way out.

“There may be a ‘tipping point’ that causes customers to seek an off-grid approach,” Morgan Stanley wrote last March. “The more customers move to solar, the remaining utility customer bill will rise, creating even further “headroom” for Tesla’s off-grid approach.”

According to inside sources, Tesla is moving to make the battery widely available as fast as possible.

“A lot of utilities are working in this space, and we’re talking to almost all of them,” said Tesla’s chief technical officer, JB Straubel. “It’s early stage stuff and a lot of these projects are very far out since the procurement cycle for utilities is so long. But this is a business that certainly is gaining an increasing amount of our attention.”

It’s been over a month since the initial announcement was made, and we’re still waiting. Hopefully, the wait won’t be in vain.

So what do you think? Are we in fact reaching a tipping point, breaking the bottleneck that prevented so many people from using renewable energy in their home? Or is this another invention meant to fail?

is there any leak about this device's working requirements or capacity??

Another invention doom to fail.Energy companies are too strong, too powerfull with too many bought "experts" and obedient politicians to allow such invention(and any other similar ones) to come into mass production and usage.Such inventions are direct threat to their multi-trillion business.Only when oil and gas reserves start to really go down such inventions will receive green light. And all patents will be owned by same big energy companies.

Right now it looks like Tesla has a startup called SolarCity.
SolarCity puts solar panels on your roof and stores the power in a Tesla battery,

from what i know, solarcity is managed by a cousin of elon but had some funding by elon in its early days... i don't think it is a subsidiary of tesla.

but this is a neat collaboration between tesla and solarcity, and furthering of technologies in elon's mars settlement plans.

so it seems there's no news about how the battery/device works.

surely tesla with elon musk as head has some power.

Solar panels are popping up on rooftops all over the place in the US.
Once people get a big enough battery to store it then it will be a game changer.
Once LED's become widespread it will cut down on a home's electrical use.

However this will all shift back when we switch to electric cars and our electricity usage skyrockets again.

I like Tesla's approach i.e. they work to better already available technology. This is the way forward. I'm annoyed we don't get quite the sun here in the UK, but I understand that isn't a strong prerequisite due to leaps in how solar cells work. Anyway, I'm all for green energy.

Oh I forgot to mention, the Doomsday preppers will love this. :sniper::yahoo:

Wind is much viable source of energy for UK.

I think most people who are really really eager about solar are in very very hot areas and use A LOT of electricity for air conditioning. One lady on the SolarCity page said she was spending $600/month on electricity ($20/day!!). I was like WTF? I live in a state where electricity is one of the most expensive in the country (but it doesn't get that hot) and I'd have to do something crazy to get a $600 bill.

Good God! Which state did she live in?

We pay around 200-300 on average in Buffalo during the winters. And as low as 60-70 in the summers.

Tesla proved to be a trend formating. Tasla s P85 is humiliating super cars with explosive acceleration 3.2 sec 100km/h. Soon bmw i5, i6, i7 are coming after i3 and i8 following tetesla.Porsche is bringing in all electric panamera and 911. Top supercars are alredy hybrid laferrari maclaren P1 and Porsche 918.
Of course key role played by batteries, chaina and israel clamied very innovative battery, charging 100% in minutes and storing for 3 to 4 times more energy. Lets see......future is hybrid and final would be pure all electric. Hopping electricity in Pakistan up till this happens.
