The indigenous Kaveri aero engine, conceived to power home-built fighter plane Tejas but generally written off as a 25-year, Rs. 2,100-crore drain on resources, now looks set to resume where it left off two years ago and complete the last lap of its development.

A surprisingly strong nudge from the government and prospects of good funds in recent months have given tailwinds to the engine programme; a revised proposal has been made on the government’s advice for the remaining part of the Kaveri activity, according to DRDO Director General (Aero) K. Tamilmani and Director, Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) C.P. Ramanarayanan. They did not elaborate on what the proposals are.

The Kaveri’s last big activity was in 2011, when it took a flight test in Russia fitted on the Il-76 transport plane. Although 90 per cent of the flight envelop was covered, at least five problems showed up, according to scientists.

Since then, the GTRE has worked on the nagging issues and would take Kaveri to its logical conclusion up to certification, Dr. Tamilmani said on Tuesday while announcing an upcoming conference of the organisation.

Next year, the GTRE plans to show the engine’s performance first on an Il-76 plane and then as the second engine fitted on a twin-engined fighter like MiG-29. It would be tuned to certification standards.

“When we do that, we will have the first indigenous [aero]engine with proven and certified performance for exploitation” — meaning it would be rendered suitable for fitting on future Indian-made military or passenger aircraft — Dr. Ramanarayanan told The Hindu later.

Dr. Tamilmani said a ready engine would precede an indigenous aircraft programme, a model followed worldwide.

The aero engine has been a vital but missing link in the country’s military aviation, which has to buy them from foreign makers at huge costs. Each aircraft needs to replace its engines three or four times during its lifetime.

In 2008, Kaveri was de-linked from its original platform, the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA). Earlier this year, senior scientists said it would be used to fly unmanned air vehicles of the armed forces. Its derivatives could go into powering ships, too.

The Ministry of Defence is buying 99 F404 jet engines for the LCA from global engines major GE for Rs. 3,000 crore.

The DRDO has missed the LCA mandate but still hopes to achieve the final objective, possibly for other equally important projects, Dr. Ramanarayanan said.

A 2011 survey by the GTRE estimated that this decade, India could spend Rs. 1.8 lakh crore to buy engines plus another Rs. 4 lakh crore for their upkeep. The DRDO scientists admit to slip-ups and lost opportunities.

In a separate activity, military plane maker Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd is developing engines for its helicopters and trainer aircraft by 2018.

complete the project so that we dont forget what we learned till now from the project, and kill the possibilities of improveing what we learnt.

IF, a big if, fit Kaveri into Mig 29 what will happens?

Kaveri is heavier around 200 kg whereas the thrust is same. can Mig 29 'adjust' 400kg extra weight at the cost of promoting own engine?

India has access to Russian tech same as china. Its all about the money being poured into these types of high-tech R&D projects for their success. If India follows the footsteps china they might be able to get the results in this project too.

Funny you should say that because China still hasn't been able to produce a reliable engine despite the fact that they've spent mush more money in their own project. Having said that, with the way things are going China will be able to have a reliable engine with the next 5-7 years; That's more than what I can say about the Kaveri engine.

^^Kaveri engine is a dream but WS is reality.
Follow my lead?

GTRE is the biggest, whitest elephant in the whole of India! Nothing has come of it so far but some Wind from beneath it's Tail! They were specifically asked to build an engine to power an airplane and 25 years and billions of rupees later, they say their engine is good for marine applications! :cuckoo:

Yep 100% agree. They are totally useless.

Buy the way can you please fax GRTE the composition of the super alloys that can withstand 2000-3000 degree at extreme high pressure and high kinetic energy.

also the file that you have on your desk about the single crystal blade technology , composite moulding , laser cutting and other such silly technology.

India's largest automaker tata has not developed good engine for its car, same goes to mahindra.( dicor and megale are from AVL not inhouse)
even when we dont know how to make a good auto-mobile engine , do you think 100s of time more complex jet engines can be made easily.

Auto engines are different from plane engines. Its not possible to make Kavari a car engine,. Its just ridiculous to salvage this project by trying to make this a train or boat engine. What India should do is learn from their mistakes and then try to improve upon this engine for the next generation plane. However, India should not tie the AMCA to Kavari either this time. If Kavari is there, fine, use it. If not, it should have other options. Maybe India can build commercial planes by then and it can use Kavari for the commercial planes.

Exactly.
One correction though: Kaveri engine is not a dream, it's a NIGHTMARE! :ashamed:

kavari engine is going to be operational within 4 years. some specification such as weight is still to be solved, which will be solved soon.

Engine development is never on schedule so don't take that timeline seriously. There is not one engine in the world that hasn't faced some sort of delay.

Sorry but I never expected these kind of arguments from senior member like you.

Are we planning to test Mig-29 with full fuel, weapon payload and for its full flight envelop? NO
Are we planning to replace original Mig-29 engine with Kaveri on permanent basis? NO

So let me conclude few things,
1. This process is just for Certification process.
2. In this process only one engine will be replaces, and not both.
3. Only comparable platform available to us with comparable size of engine is Mig-29 (so Mig-29 is right choice).
