The Tomahawk cruise missile, one of America’s most successful and combat-proven weapons, has been modified to take on an antiship role to help counter the threat posed by the rapid expansion of China’s navy.

A new version of the missile, known as the Tomahawk Block V, is being fitted with a maritime target-seeking system to track and hit enemy warships from more than 1,000 miles away.


The Tomahawk, previously a land-attack weapon fired from surface ships and submarines, can hit a warship steaming at 20-30 knots. It is viewed as a crucial part of the Pentagon’s strategy to build sufficient size and firepower to deter China from pursuing military domination in the Indo-Pacific region.

The US military wouldn’t launch a single Tomahawk. They’d launch in combination with LRASM or supersonic SM-6 in multiaxial strikes. And now the Navy is developing the hypersonic SM-6 Block 1B.

The Chinese Navy will now have to factor in a 1,000mile antiship Tomahawk in its risk assessment. It just gets harder from here for China.

As far as air launched US philosophy is subsonic stealth cruise missile. while u rely on superspnic speed.

and as far as range JASSM-ER has a range of 925 KM+ twice that of YJ-18

Stealth is overrated. Yeah it's good for marketing. But doesn't work in reality. Too much range is not a good thing either due to curvature of the earth. Anything more than 500 km is not that useful.

Lets be honest, in a scenario of war with China, it is arguable that the US's strategic nuclear weapons still pose a serious threat to China, but US should not count on missiles launched from any platform in the sea, the launch platform will be gone in a matter of minutes if China want to.
