The insurgents Arakan Army killed 13 police in a similar attack further north in January and has frequently clashed with Myanmar security forces since December - Reuters file photo

Arakan Army insurgents killed nine Myanmar police in the latest attack in the country’s western Rakhine State, a local official said on Sunday, as clashes threaten to engulf a large part of the troubled region.

Villagers heard gunfire as fighters from the armed group, which recruits from the mainly Buddhist Rakhine ethnic group, raided a police post in the village of Yoe Ta Yoke late on Saturday night.

The village’s administrator San Aung Thein confirmed nine police were killed by the Arakan Army there, but said he did not have additional details about the attack.

Police officials could not be reached for comment.

The insurgents of Arakan Army killed 13 police in a similar attack further north in January and has frequently clashed with Myanmar security forces since December.

Myanmar’s leaders vowed to crush the rebels, who are fighting for autonomy for Rakhine, but clashes have spread to new areas, displacing more than 5,000 people in all. Authorities have declared large parts of the north of the state off-limits to most aid agencies, reports Reuters.

In 2017, attacks on security posts by insurgents from the Muslim Rohingya minority provoked a military crackdown in the north of the state. UN agencies say more than 730,000 people fled into camps in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar district.

Saturday night’s attack took place about 50 km (31 miles) north of the Rakhine state capital Sittwe, along the main road connecting the city with the rest of Myanmar.

A villager in his fifties said that two policemen stationed at the post survived the attack, which took place shortly after 11 pm.

“The battle went on for about 20 minutes,” said the villager, who asked not to be named. “I was in village at that time and I heard gun shots, but the villagers didn’t run away.”

It is time that the Bamars of Burma left Rakhine to be ruled by its native people. Rakhine is under Burmese control only since 1938. It was independent before that with some kind of vassal status with the Sultanate of Bengal.

Union of Burma is just a non-unity entity enforced by the British. Bamars should be happy to live in central Burma by giving up lands in its north, east and west to the natives.

You need history lessons because Rakhine was taken by the Konbaung dynasty in 1784 more than 200 years ago so you need to go and look up the history of Rakhine again and also Rakhine stoped being a vassal of Sultanate of Bengal in the 1460s.

It was just for 40 years and locals did not agree with it. That’s why both Rohingya and Arakanese since 1947 is seeking independence.

Lol whom you like to make fool?

So why in 1981 Rohingyas nationality was revoked? British even promised independence to them. Independence movement started even before creation of Myanmar.

Beside what do you think, people don’t know about Rakhine rebels?

You have no clue what you talking about.

Even ARSA looks formidable these days. Good for Arakan Army.. they have somebody to watch their back.

Savages thought they could placate the Rakhines by kicking out Rohingya.
Wonder if BD is helping the rebels now? :azn:

Bamar thoughts, by creating hysteria against Rohingyas will make Rakhine to take shelter under Bamar domination. But nobody is that fool when billions of dollar worth of resources are gettling stolen everyday from Rakhaine land leaving aboriginal people half starved.

Sorry forgot to add a full stop after Rohingya on the sentence above the last part of the sentence is referring to the Rakhine people.

What are you smoking?

BN has two new Type-056 corvettes and 2 are undergoing sea trials in China right now.

BN will have 6 powerful Air-defence frigates by 2030.
Unlike Myanmar BD has an economy that can afford these numbers of advanced ships.

Burma has never ruled their present Northwestern territories before. The Union of Burma is as pathetic as the Union of India. I think that Rohingyas should just take arms to fight the burmese junta. Don't cry foul while more than ten of Burma Northwestern monorities are fighting.

I think independence for the Rohingya is a bad move. An autonmous province is diplomatically a more 'sellable' solution.

I wonder what do know about the history of Rakhine in the relationship with Burma? The Burmese invaded Rakhine in 1784 and Rakhine was under its occupation till 1826 after which it came under the Presidency of Bengal after the 1st Anglo-Burma war. Only in 1938, Bengal handed over this region to British Burma only because it would make easy for its administration.

Stupid, it was in the 1430s that the legitimate King of Rakhine got back his Kingdom from his usurper nephew supported by the barbarian Burmese. It remained a Protectorate under Bengal for Centuries and fearing Bengal troops the Burmese never again invaded this land until 1784. All the Kings and Nobles of Rakhine remained Buddhist but took Muslims names to identify themselves with Muslim Bengal.

They did not identify with the tree-living savages of Burma. Learn from history books instead of talking nonsense.

Yes, but an autonomous Province under the flag of Bangladesh.
