New railway project to link India and Bangladesh

Agartala: India and Bangladesh would soon sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to set up a railway link between Tripura capital Agartala and Bangladesh’s southeastern city of Akhaurah, officials here said Friday.

At a cost of Rs.271 crore, India will build a 15-km railway track linking Agartala with Akhaurah which is an important railway junction connected to the Chittagong international port, resource-rich Sylhet and Dhaka.

Of the 15-km rail line, five km of track falls in the Indian territory and the remaining in Bangladesh.

A six-member inter-ministerial team, led by Radhika L. Lokesh, joint secretary in the external affairs ministry, is now on an on-the-spot final study in Tripura.

“The inter-ministerial team after visiting Tripura would submit a report to the government of India. Then, the Indian government would approach the Bangladesh government to sign the MoU,” a Tripura government official told reporters.

“After signing the MoU, the actual works of the railway project would start,” the official said.

The new railway project to connect the two neighbouring countries was decided by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Bangladesh Premier Sheikh Hasina during her visit to India in January 2010.

“The Indian Railway Construction Company (IRCON) would lay the new railway tracks on both sides of the border,” an official of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) said.

“With the establishment of the new railway link, northeast India would be connected to the Chittagong international sea port by rail,” he added.

Surface connectivity is an important factor as the landlocked northeastern states are surrounded by Bangladesh, Myanmar, Bhutan and China and the only land route to these states from within India is through Assam and West Bengal. But this route passes through over 70 percent hilly terrain with steep roads and multiple hairpin bends.

For ferrying goods and heavy machinery to the northeast from abroad and other parts of the country, India has for long been seeking land, sea and rail access through Bangladesh.

Agartala, for instance, is 1,650 km from Kolkata and 2,637 km from New Delhi via Guwahati and West Bengal, whereas the distance between the Tripura capital and Kolkata through Bangladesh is just about 350 km.

The NFR is now laying tracks to connect Tripura’s southern most border town Sabroom, 135 km south of here. From Sabroom, the Chittagong international sea port is just 72 km.

Distance from Kolkata to Agartala is 1650 km against the 350km distance via Bangladesh. The decrease of cost of transport for(1650-350)=1350km and the minimizing of time and labours must be calculated to the tiny details in a way that the Indians would have done to find out the economic benefits India will get from this arrangement. BD should transform its mind to a miserly Indian mind and demand at least 60% of the benefits from this water-stealing big DADA.

I see no issues with this, BD needs to ensure it makes commercial sense for us.

Well we should have little soft corner when we will deal with Tripura and Assam at least. Tripura is a Bengali majority state where most of the people have originated from present day Bangladesh including the present CM. Assam is also on its way to become Bengali majority state. They can be under our direct influence and can be a major market. We need to make them realize that we are more close and well wisher to them then even WB or Delhi. Hope you have got my point.

For god sake you guys ruin the thread even before it is discussed and understood. Kolkata to Dhaka railway is already in operational and only Dhaka to Agartala has to built. If I am right, the mou for the new link between Dhaka and Agartala. So what ever transit fee you guys are imposing on us still stands and nothing new tariffs is being proposed. Unless you guy in your unltimate wisdom want to kill the project before it begins.

No, no one is ruining this thread. We are just trying to act more like Marwari and Baniya Indians, that's all. But, your perception about this Akhaura-Agartala railway project is little wrong. This line is for transporting Indian goods to Tripura from Akhaura and Chittagong points. Calcutta goods will go via our sea and river territories to Akhaura river port, from where the freight trains will pull these across the border to Agartala. Chittagong-Akhaura-Agartala route does not need an explanation.

As for Transit, India will bear half the cost for construction and will get a payment from each and every vehicle passing through BD.
It should be a win win for both trade connectivity and commercial success.

Good, then talk to your PM. He should also talk to Burmese military for that kind of long distance train connectivity. For India, NE access is very important, without which NE infrastructure cannot develop fast enough. Economy of a region cannot rise without first building its physical infrastructure.

We have ignored the NE region for long and we want to make up for it. Because of long and arduous routes to landlocked NE from mainland India, it has become imperative to find alternate routes. If you guys play your cards right, I am sure our govt. will bend over backwards to develop the transit routes across Bangladesh. It could be all three- ports, roads and railways. I will also caution that for this to happen a good and stable govt in Dhaka is essential and must. We have the wherewithal to go through and make this happen. Do you???

the only thing u guys can influence is when to do your personal ablutions. nothing more. this is the right time annex the northern part of BD to india and send its inhabitants to southern bangladesh
