He said the number of registered cases in NWFP is 187000, in Balochistan 7654 and in Sindh this number has reached 144924. The registrar said that decisions would be made in all these cases in a period of six months:tup::tup::tup:.

Highlighing salient features of judicial policy, Dr. Faqir Hussain said that the people would experience a positive change after the implementation of new policy. He said a special cell will be set up to eliminate corruption from the judiciary and the judges will neither serve as acting Governors nor accept any other positions.

He said that corrupt judicial officials will be made OSD. The Supreme Court registrar said that all the judges deputed to various departments have been called back and no judge will be appointed in his/her native district.

i dont know how are they gonna solve these half a million cases in six months but if they do it will be great. quick and cheap justice must be provided. this will definately make it quick

This is good.I hope they take more steps to ensure Judiciary is 100% free and effective!

They are planning on resorting to a temporary judge policy what they will do is make neutral lawyers judges and help solve cases at lightening speed and I think alot of the cases will be dropped due to no turnout from either of the parties.

I hope that this really happens for a country to be progressive i strongly believe it needs a strong judicary...and as for PAKISTAN....it is a country with alot of potential...once pakistanis put their heart to something no one can stop them....i am sure our judicary shall hold everyone accountable and we will become a strong powerful nation!!! SC can review 17th Amendment, says Chaudhry

* CJP says courts have jurisdiction to interpret laws, constitution
* Says protection for 17th Amend under Article 270-AA can also be reviewed

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Monday observed that the Supreme Court is completely empowered to examine or review the 17th Amendment – which is protected under Article 270-AA of the Constitution – if the need arises.

Heading a three-member bench consisting of Justice Raja Fayyaz and Justice Chaudhry Ejaz — the chief justice made the observation while dismissing an appeal filed by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) seeking to cancel the allotment of a plot to an employee.

Afnan Kundi – representing the CDA – said the authority had cancelled the allotment of a plot to employee Bashir Hussain under CDA rules, as he did not build a house within the required period. He said a city district court as well as high court had decided the case in favour of the employee, although “courts are not empowered to interfere in such matters”.

Jurisdiction: However, the chief justice said courts were completely empowered to review laws based on mala fide intention. He said courts also had ‘absolute jurisdiction’ to interpret laws and the constitution.

270-AA: “If needed, the Supreme Court can review Article 270-AA of the Constitution under which the 17th Amendment is protected,” observed Iftikhar. Article 270-AA protects the October 12,1999, military coup. According to its language, the article cannot be called into question in any court or forum of the country on any ground whatsoever. Various political parties have been calling for the 17th Amendment to be withdrawn, and several have also framed drafts for this purpose.

Better him than all the other evils however I would like to see him elected to power over alot of the people that have sold our nation to the US a countless number of times.

great but short term solution ... I hope that there is a financial uplift/ relief package for our judiciary.

Pay rises will help straighten those that were about to go on the wrong path but not help everyone plus we need to outsmart the rich not outspend them.

All will fail. The whole system no matter how sincere CJ is full of fallacies thats why its crumbling and its bound to fall. This system was shrewdly designed by BRITISH to keep check on there slaves. Dont take me as pessimist, I am very optimist about what will happen after the inevitable fall. To build a new 'structure' the old one gets demolished first.

If it happens so it would univversal record for sure. and lots of other countries would follow it. And it would be great, bcoz in current condition due to delay in hearing lots of case's keep going on for year's. Some time you can get the result and some some time you dont.
