New Life for something like METO (Middle East Treaty Organization)

With our Army Chief's repeated visits between Turkey, KSA, and USA, looks like METO like organization is being resurrected. To be honest that seems to be an hour of the need too.

So what was METO?

Middle East Treaty Organization (METO) was formed in 1955 by Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey.
This was also called Baghdad pact.

Later it was named as CENTO.

And existed until 1979 when the situation in Iraq and Iran could not longer support it and thus it was dissolved.

The common threat back then was from commies.
Now it has morphed into a challenge from islamis.

and thus a new arc is being formed to create a joint defense against the neo-narchists.

Whether the new alliance becomes a reality is anyone's guess.

However the basic blueprint is there and could be put in practice very very quickly.

I remember something about one Turkish PM talking about something similar to an Islamic Union where we share one currency and etc... But the Idea was disbanded as Soviet Union became a threat and the PM was removed.

It is not going to happen. Turkey is in a different league and is a part of NATO. Iran and KSA can never come together. We have so many things to sort out in our backyard rather then thinking about METO or any alliance. We as in Pakistan should never get into all this BS otherwise we would be in between dealing with ME mess. Better stay alone as in according to out interests and make friends for business purposes.

Don't think Iran will be part this time around.

Turkey however can be.

if you haven't noticed, problems in our backyard are not isolated.

In fact these problems, aka money and weapon and men flow across the region.

We cannot continue fighting while sitting at home. At some point you have to take the fight to the source of Islamist terror.

Otherwise Pakistan will remain a punching bag for the Mullahs from the whole region and not just FATA.

We have pretty much cleared FATA already so the threat is from outside now.

What else you would like to see?

Anything more of this union is an obsolete concept.

nation states do not allow destruction of borders in the name of globalized union.

EU like thing is possible only if there is a technical and economic powerhouse like Germany and France in the middle.

However EU was formed after decades long successful experiment of military alliance like NATO.

Similarly if Pakistan GCC and KSA form military alliance for 50 years, and people in the country still want union, that could be the next step.
