Every year, the river system in BD carries about 2.4 billion ton of silt, sand and sediment from their sources in the Himalayan plateau in the north, NE and NW. A certain percentage of it forms the Shoal (চর) in the rivers, and the remaining most are carried to the sea. The silts have been accumulating for the last few million years and built what is now BD. This process is now forming new islands near the BoB shores.this needs to happen to compensate for what the rivers take away every year - let alone the rising seas

I think, the rivers started being created with water coming down from the Himalayas a few hundred million years ago after it rose gradually above the sea level when the Indian land collided with the Tibetan land in the north. Some say our main rivers were created due to massive earthquake and there may be Faults underlying the riverbed.
