Advanced attack chopper joins Iran fleet

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC)'s latest homemade attack helicopter, the Shahed (Witness) 285, has joined Iran's aerial fleet.

The Shahed 285 was unveiled Sunday on the anniversary of the 1982 liberation of the Iranian city Khoramshahr -- which was occupied by Iraqi forces during the 1980-88 war.

The IRGC says the state-of-the-art helicopter is capable of taking part in seaborne and airborne combat operations. The Shahed 285 can carry autocanons, machine guns, guided missiles, anti-armor missiles and air-to-air and air-to-sea missiles.

The "100-percent domestic-made all-weather aircraft" has a slick aerodynamic design and is capable of taking off in harsh conditions.

The chopper's rotors and cabin are made from advanced composite materials. The newly developed aircraft is easy-to-maintain and can be stored in combat zones for immediate access.

A number of Shahed 285s -- which have successfully passed numerous test-flights -- were handed to the IRGC Air Force on Sunday.

Iran's latest endeavor follows the successful test-fire of its new deterrent ballistic missile, the Sejjil II, which has a 2000-kilometer surface-to-surface range.

Over the years after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, internationally blockaded Iran has managed to design and manufacture various missiles, fighters, stealth aircraft, drones, submarines, radar systems, and military vessels.

could this be of PA interest? This could definatly full fill PA light attack requirements.

oopss.. i just opened a new thread on this..

but haider argentinian chopper is tottaly different from iranian one. no need to compare them.

By hearing the sound of the engine, I'm guessing they reversed engineered some Bell-206's and turned them into a new attack chopper with a few modifications to the air frame and cockpit.

decent helo but not much of firepower with it i would consider it only side by side with our future advance heavy duty helos from either turkey, south africa or euro.if Iran is willing to sell it @ $1.2 million a piece only:). I would still prefer Chinese Z-11.

Jet Ranger + Cobra = Badly designed Iranian Shahed 285

The designers and engineers at HESA need to upgrade their design process. This bird looks more like a prototype out of a hobbyist garage in the US then it does from a well equipped helicopter manufacturing plant like HESA.

Hey even its a copy or has really bad design atleast they always try lol i have to give it to them they are cut of from most of the world so the have to try on there own although i don't agree with wat ever they might do but i give them credit for trying and watever they do !

Just looking at the shape its similarity to Bell 206 is there.

Guess they wanted something in a role like OH58 Kiowa

FULL MARKS TO IRAN. I SALUTE IRANIANS ON THIS ACHIEVEMENT. IN THIS FIELD WE DON'T EVEN STARTED YET AND THEY HAVE A FLYING HELLO. WE HAVE CHINA AT OUR SIDE AND THEY HAVE A BLOCKADE AND EVEN THEN THEY ARE SUCCESSFUL.

I am throughly UN-impressed by this "new" attack helicopter. It looks like somthing made in 1970-80s, look at the cockpit- it is throughly outdated. Really not up to scratch with modern attack helos or those under development like the Tiger, ZH-9 and LCH.

"Shahed"
not a good name for attack helicopter ..... its not meant to die in battle but to kill ....
pilot will known as as shahed pilot while flying and even after getting killed .....

relax man
this is not supposed to be bleeding edge tech.
Iran is simply paying its dues in R&D
The west has had a huge head starts.
Countries like Iran and China are slowly but surly catching up.
