Lt Gen V K Singh next Army chief

NEW DELHI: Lt Gen V K Singh, the Eastern Army Commander and senior-most infantry officer, was on Friday named the next Army chief.

59-year-old Singh will take over from Gen Deepak Kapoor on March 31 when he retires from service, defence ministry spokesperson Sitanshu Kar said here. He will have around a two-year tenure.

The defence ministry issued the order appointing Singh for the top post after the Cabinet Committee on Appointments cleared his name yesterday.

Singh was in the news recently when he recommended action against four General-ranked officers indicted by a probe in the Sukhna land scam in Darjeeling district of West Bengal. The defence ministry has also sought equal treatment in action against the four.

A third generation officer from the Rajput regiment, Singh is a graduate of the Wellington-based Defense Services Staff College as well as the Rangers Course at Fort Benning, USA and the US Army War College, Carlisle.

He was commissioned into 2 Rajput Regiment in June 1970 and commanded the same unit when it was positioned along the Line of Control with Pakistan.

Experienced in counter insurgency operations, Line of Control and high altitude operations, Singh was awarded the Yudh Sena Medal for his distinguished service during 'Operation Pawan' against the LTTE in Sri Lanka.

Lt.Gen Vijay Singh appointed the new Indian Army Chief replacing the incumbent Gen. Kapoor on 31st March-2010.

so the generals statement was a 'parting' gift to india/pak relations. now the good General will start his 'farewell' visits to all the corps HQs. so there is no chance of a 'war' at least till march 31st-2010.

we can all rest easy!

I dont know you but I will trust my intuition on this one. I dont think you are qualified to comment on a nation's COAS

His comments over the last few months may have been inimical to your taste, but that's no reason for you to show disrespect.
