New Delhi’s Toxic Smog Has Beijing Pollution Beat

Pollution comes from winter burning not from industry
We're facing same issue in Beijing several years ago.
Gov also said it's only a winter burning issue, so banned it, but no improvement at all.
heavy industry is the root reason.Thermal power plant.More than 65% of India's electricity generation capacity comes from thermal power plants, with about 85% of the country's thermal power generation being coal-based. India imported many second hand thermal power unit, very cheap, due to those power unit were banned in China.

Must be scary not knowing when a car will come speeding out of the smog.

China's electricity generation composition is similar to India. The large state run coal power plants in China are relatively clean and uses new technology. The problem is that there are many small unclean community based coal plants for heating of apartment buildings, especially in Northern China thus producing severe smog in the winter. These small coal plants don't produce electricity, just heat water to be pumped to apartments. Another big issue is the lax enforcement regarding truck emission filtration.

Other than reducing winter burning I don't think there is a easy fix. Its unreasonable to ask people in India to drive less or use less energy. The only way is to have better energy infrastructure and emissions regulation.

India is in a even worse condition compared to US. They have maybe 1 or 2 Supercritical plants the last time I checked. Still remember few years ago, there was this Chola guy in BR forum, who said China sucks because India is going to have supercritical plants connected by UHV near the mine pit. Last I check China has a dozen UHV lines in operation, India is commissioning ONE.

Just made a check on the power statistics of India. Very surprised to see its ultra-low efficiency, which really makes me shocked.

There are two important indicators to evaluate the efficiency of a power supply/transmission network. One is "how much coal required to produce one kwh electricity", another is "% of electricity loss in transmission".

For the first indicator, India's power sector consumes 545.9 million ton coal last year, and generates 895,340 Gwh electricity, i.e. 610g/kwh;

For the 2nd indicator, power loss %, it is a horrible 21.81%; i.e. 1/5 of the electricity is wasted!!

The corresponding China figure is:
- 311gram coal per kwh (the yellow row); i.e. for the same quantify of coal, India could produce 1 unit of power, but China could produce 2 units of power.
- 6.4% loss rate (the blue row)

Coal consumption rates comparison between China's most-efficient power plants vs. US's most efficient power plants
