New model, new price: Indus Motor unveils Corolla Altis

Toyota Corolla Altis has been introduced with an eco-meter for the first time in the country that allows a driver to monitor fuel economy, according to a statement issued by the second largest car maker in the country.

The new price of Altis manual and Altis manual with sunroof will be Rs1,719,000 and Rs1,809,000, while Altis automatic and Altis automatic with sunroof will cost Rs1,809,000 and Rs1,899,000, respectively.

The car is equipped with a new six-speed manual transmission while automatic variants are equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission The new Altis includes redesigned front grill along with sleek head lamps and crystal tail lamps.

IMC also introduced an automatic GLi variant, priced at Rs1, 679,000, keeping in view the long-standing demand from customers, the statement said.

He claims his collection is the biggest in Pakistan. A 39-year-old man from Lahore has a craze for toy cars and has more than 4,000 "scaled-down" models of actual vehicles. Aamir Ashfaq, a resident of Lahore's Allama Iqbal town, is always in search of cars every time he visits a market. He h


as now collected over 4,000 toy cars of 45 different brands, the Daily Times reported.
Ashfaq started collecting toy cars when he was only eight years old. He has got a special room built for the toy cars in his house.

His collection of toy cars is unique in itself.

Some of the vehicles have doors, hoods, trunks and fuel caps that open, ashtrays that slide out and glove compartments that have space inside. Some even have hanging ignition keys. Most of them have working steering and suspension.

Ashfaq possesses cars of many brands - including Matchbox, Hot Wheels, Majorette, Corgi, Johnny Lightening, Burago, Tomica, Jada Toys, Real Toy, Norev, Maisto, Welly, Siku and Kinsmart.

Most of his cars were manufactured in the US, Britain, Germany, Italy, France, Greece, Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, China, Thailand, Taiwan and Macao.

His collection features many brands, including Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche, Volkswagen, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Fiat, Peugeot, Renault, MG, Austin Martin, Land Rover, Range Rover, Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, Isuzu, Mazda, Toyota, Lexus, Subaru, Ford, Hyundai, Mini Cooper, Jaguar, Bugatti, Hummer and many more.

For Ashfaq, collecting toy cars has been a passion since childhood which he still enjoys. "I love every single part about these street machines," he said.

He said he did not face any opposition from his parents regarding his hobby. "I really thank my parents for their effort. They never refused whenever I asked for a toy car."

"Whenever I went to a mart, first of all I would pick up a toy car and look towards my parents who never disappointed me," he recalled.

Ambitious urban bus plan derails

LAHORE – The plan to bring 2,000 CNG buses in Lahore has run into a difficult situation after the levy of 16pc General Sales Tax in the federal budget on the purchase of new buses.

TheNation has learnt that many foreign as well as local transport firms have recently expressed a concern over the situation arising out of the GST. The talk is also there that the bus companies have hinted to take back their investments in the Urban Transport Project if the GST was not scrapped.

The firms, it was also learnt, have urged the Punjab Government to push the Federal Government for taking back its decision to levy GST. Rightly placed sources told TheNation that the negotiations in this regard among all the stakeholders were already underway.

The sources further said that the implementation of the GST would not only affect the Lahore Urban Transport Project, but also hurt investment in other transport sector projects in Punjab. At least 2,500 buses are required to cater for the thousands of daily commuters in Lahore alone. Today less than 300 buses are plying on the city’s 53 routes, with another 38 already closed down.

The sources said that after the levy of the GST, the price of a single bus would increase by Rs1.5 million.

“Either the provincial government has to settle this amount in its own budget by revisiting the earlier agreements with the transport companies or the federal government has to take back the levy of GST.”

On the other hand, the Lahore Transport Company would receive as many as 50 new CNG buses from China in July this year. According to the sources, the manufacturing company is almost ready to dispatch the buses. An official of the LTC who was alarmed at the GST issue said on Thursday that the situation needed to be addressed immediately.

Similarly, the LTC would also receive another fleet of 61 buses by September this year. Another company in China had also made an agreement with LTC to manufacture 100 buses for plying these on various routes of the Lahore city, the official added.

French firm wins contract for Toyota in Pakistan

LONDON (APP) –A leading French manufacturer has won a major contract in Pakistan to supply Indus Toyota car maker with an giant industrial crane.

As part of the deal, Verlinde, renowned as France’s leading builder and exporter of hoists and lifting equipment, has supplied car manufacturer’s plant in Karachi with one of its latest 80 tonne cranes, described as an exceptional product with the lifting power to supply the needs of this key manufacturing and distribution centre for Toyota vehicles in Pakistan’s premier city.

According to a company announcement, installation of the biggest crane that Toyota has to date has now been completed by Verlinde on schedule

Commenting on the deal, business development Manager for Verlinde, Simon Rothechild, said “We are delighted to be able to announce this significant contract and in Pakistan and it is particularly pleasing for such a big order to follow so quickly after our move into this new territory. Like Verlinde, Indus Toyota has an enviable global has been actively involved in the negotiations with Indus Toyota and welcomed the order and the developing relationship between the two giants of global manufacturing.

Chinese company to provide 2,000 buses for Karachi, 111 for Lahore

ISLAMABAD - A Chinese bus manufacturer, Foton Motors Company, will sign an MoU with the Sindh government on Saturday for the provision of 2,000 CNG buses to Karachi.

The company’s team, headed by Ye Zhaoyou called on President Asif Zardari at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Thursday. The delegation included Foton AUV Bus Global Marketing Director Zhang Jun, Holly Foton Company GM Liu Liran, Marketing Manager Xu Qingli, Service Manager Zhao Bin, MD and CEO Joseph Verghese, and President Foton America Perry T Blackerby.

The delegation from Pakistan included Secretary General to the President Salman Farooqui, Adviser to the PM for Industries Muhammad Basharat Raja, BOI Chairman Saleem H Mandviwala, Spokesman to the President Farhatullah Babar and others. The Chinese delegation said it had set up its business in Karachi in 2008 and had been carrying out business in the country since then. It had designed environment-friendly busses according to the demographic needs of the country. The president welcomed the visiting delegation and praised their interest in exploring business opportunities in Pakistan in the transport industry.

He highlighted the investment-friendly business opportunities offered by Pakistan in variety of areas including oil and gas, mining, trading, energy, IT and Telecom, food and agriculture, SMEs, infrastructure and others. The president said his aim was to convert the country into one of the most attractive investment-friendly country in the world.

Ye Zhaoyou briefed the president about his company’s ventures in Pakistan and informed him that the company had been awarded a contract for 111 CNG buses for Lahore through the Lahore Transport Company which is expected to commence from November 1. The president said there was room of expansion in the field and the investors should take full benefit from the opportunity.

Mega Pakistan Auto Show 2011

Lahore: The three-day Pakistan Auto Show 2011 has been started on Monday at the Expo Centre with international and national manufacturers and part-makers taking part in the ceremony.

Opening ceremony held at the Convention Centre, where Engineering Development Board (EDB) Chief Executive Officer Aitzaz Niazi, Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts and Accessories Manufacturers (PAAPAM) Chairman Syed Nabeel Hashmi and Vice Chairman Munir K Bana addressed the gathering.

Addressing as the chief guest, Mr Aitzaz Niazi congratulated PAAPAM management for holding such a wonderful display of products and capabilities to the world. He said that the auto vendor industry is continuously embrassing the latest technologies to meet requirements and ever increasing global challenges. He pointed out that a lot has to be done on quality and standardization front.

The EDB chief executive officer advised the auto industry to vigorously explore global markets not only to enhance businesses but also to meet challenges at domestic level. In 2005, the EDB launched an ambitious market expansion programme for the engineering sector and achieved remarkable success in terms of export development and exposure of over 150 companies to the global sourcing chain, he informed the gathering.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Syed Nabeel Hashmi said that Pakistan has a vibrant auto industry that plays host to major global original equipment manufacturers like Toyota, Honda, Suzuki and Massey Ferguson who have made Pakistan their home.

Today, Pakistan manufactures tractors, cars, motorcycles and heavy vehicles that were playing a vital role in the economic development of the country.

He said that PAAPAM members have made to achieve local manufacturing content of 70 percent in case of passenger and light commercial vehicles, 90 percent of motorcycles and tractors and 45 percent of heavy commercial vehicles.

Nabeel Hashmi informed the gathering that Pakistan is one of the most competitive global manufacturers of tractors and 2-wheelers that have now geared up into the export markets. In case of passenger vehicles, domestic products are highly competitive in comparison with neighbours.

About 128 exhibitors have covered 88000 square feet of exhibiting space at the two major halls of the Expo Centre. Participants and representatives from Japan, Germany, UAE, Italy, Holland, Sri Lanka, China and Australia are here to attend the auto show. While the product range includes completely built up vehicles including cars, trucks, buses, tractors, motorcycles and auto components range in thousands.

During the auto show, there will have seven seminar sessions with subjects including the automotive industry, management and export promotions. Nabeel Hashmi also said that the mega auto show will have a positive impact on the industry, which is growing day by day. He said that foreign and domestic manufacturers and part makers of cars, motorcycles and tractors are exhibiting their products in the Pakistan Auto Show which will continue till Wednesday at the Expo Centre.
