During his meeting with the Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Israeli PM Netanyahu expressed keen interest to strengthen ties with India.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s Israel visit marks the beginning of a new era of relations between the two nations. According to reports, after meeting with Singh on Thursday night, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said that the two countries were at the beginning of a new era and they are working to raise cooperation in a wide variety of fields.

Israel and India are beginning a new era,” said Netanyahu.

The Home Minister is on a four-day visit to Israel with top officials to carry on the resurgence of relations, which mainly began in 2000 with historic visit of then Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister LK Advani.

It is significant to note that Prime Minister Netanyahu acknowledged that in the recent months the thread of ties between India and Israel have been strengthened after new dispensation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumed power in New Delhi.

He called Prime Minster Modi as a staunch ally of Israel.

It is important to note that during their meeting in September on the sidelines of UNGA, PM Netanyahu had told his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi that his Government was excited about the possibilities of stronger ties with India, and “the sky is the limit.”

The key threads which bind relations between the two countries include – India is the largest buyer of Israeli defence hardware, Israel’s military delegation to India is second only in size to its delegation to America and moreover, the two countries also have a Joint Working group on counter-terrorism.

India and Israel are worst hit by the menace of terrorism and leaderships of the both countries have believed that their cooperation in this field could be crucial in dealing with the problem.
Recently, Narendra Modi Government went ahead to strike a $1440 lakh deal with Israel to purchase 262 made Barak 1 surface-to-air missiles. With this, India’s 14 battleships will be equipped with the weapons over the course five years.

The report says that India bought 8,356 Spike anti-tank missiles and 321 launchers from Israel last month in a deal worth Rs 32 billion ($525 million).

Interestingly, the two countries have also been involved in joint military projects and Israel is developing the Barak 8 advanced missile with the active involvement of India, further pointing to the strong military ties.

It is not for the first time that Israel has shown keen interest in developing stronger relations with India but on occasions too, it has termed India a major potential ally.

During NDA I, the two countries had agreed in a great way to cooperate in defence, national security and other areas of development, especially in development of agriculture in desert areas.

It is significant to note that a State like Gujarat, which has desert covering large parts, attained 9 per cent agricultural growth by using Israeli agricultural technology.

Obviously, Israel can prove to be a great help for India in many important fields. Unfortunately, barring NDA, none of the Governments paid any importance to strengthening ties between India and Israel.

More importantly, I wonder whether India is going to condemn the recent butchering of innocent Palestinian civilians during the visit. What about a condemnation regarding the continued illegal settlement expansion on Palestinian lands? As a friend of Israel, India has the obligation to bring such human rights violations to the forefront. If it doesn't, it would tantamount to condoning Israeli actions.

Yea right. How about the treatment of minorities in Islamic countries. Let's bring up their civil and human rights issues first.
