LAHORE:
The National Engineering Services of Pakistan Limited (Nespak) presented a plan for upgrading a number of railway stations in Punjab to Minister of Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique, during his visit to the Nespak House.

A team of Nespak professionals, led by Managing Director Amjad Khan, gave a detailed presentation on the existing condition of railway stations including those at Narowal, Nankana Sahib, Okara, Sahiwal and Hasan Abdal.

These stations desperately need redevelopment due to lack of facilities and deteriorating conditions of existing buildings as well as allied infrastructure.

The salient features of the upgrading plan include renovation of existing stations and platforms, complete area redevelopment, commercial use of available land by setting up, among other things, commercial plazas and marriage halls, improvement of infrastructure, widening of existing road networks and renovation of staff colonies.

The proposed facilities include air-conditioned restaurants, waiting lounges, kiosks, fast-food outlets and recreational parks.

Nespak has prepared redevelopment and improvement schemes for the railway stations on modern standards. Its scope of work will consist of master planning, architectural, engineering and landscape designs and construction supervision.

The minister assured the Nespak management that Pakistan Railways would surely take benefit of the expertise of its professionals.

I think with improvements, they should also change how our railway stations function. For example, there should be a separate bogie for luggage. People give their luggage for security clearance at the station and their luggage is transported to the bogie just like what we see at airports. No more pulling luggage around, no more congested space in the train because of all the luggage sitting left and right.

true that it should be done... will help in Security and facilitate the passengers... But the thing is Coolies at the railway Station wont have much work left then...

Unfortunately we have authentic assholes sitting in our planning division. Railway is sitting on prime land worth billions and yet it does not have money to buy the engines.

What they (PR) should do is build multi story modern plazas (comprising of shopping mall, offices, and hotels) on railway stations (with railway stations going underground on same place). The buildings can be either sold or leased. Start with bigger places like Lahore, and Karachi (city and Cant) railway stations. This would generate enough funds to make railways sulf sufficient in cash. They can do the same in all major cities. BUT as we have a history of corrupt land mafia, this whole operation should be very transparent and well regulated.

Useless initiative if you have "breathing problem" you don't go and have plastic surgery on you butt

Buy 500-600 Locomotives purchase or lease then worry about cosmetics that can be done by Local companies like Nespak

We hear grand projects worth billion to link Gwadar to Lahore and some area to China etc or to Turkey and we have no locomotives or world standard (performance wise) locomotive manufacturing unit
