Protesters ask India for 'Nepal's Independence'

TNN 15 August 2009, 04:49pm IST

KATHMANDU: As India celebrated its 63rd Independence Day on Saturday, the demand for a "Greater Nepal" erupted afresh with protesters asking New
Delhi to release annexed Nepali territory as well.

"On Aug 15, 1957, India became independent of British rule," said Phanindra Nepal, a 58-year-old Nepali professor whose United Nepal National Front has begun a dogged – and difficult – campaign to recover from India the Nepali land that was added to it during an Anglo-Nepali treaty signed in 1816. "So the Nepali land annexed by the British and added to India should also be released."

For an hour, over 100 people demonstrated in front of the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, demanding the return of nearly 58,000 sq km of land which the Front says belongs to Nepal but now lies in India. In 1816 the rulers of Nepal signed the now infamous Sugauli Treaty with the British East India Company after a protracted war to avid defeat. However, it was a penalising treaty making Nepal forfeit almost a third of its territory that now is part of Uttaranchal, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Sikkim and Bihar.

After India became independent, it signed a Peace and Friendship Treaty in 1950 that promised to supersede all previous bilateral pacts and the Front says since the scrapped Sugauli Treaty’s provisions therefore are no longer valid, the ceded land should come back to Nepal.

"If the issue is not settled peacefully through bilateral talks, we will have to go to the UN," said Nepal, who has in the past submitted a memorandum to the British Embassy, asking them, as one of the signatories, to take initiative in restoring ceded Nepali land.

Though the Indian authorities in Nepal launched a new magazine, Maitree, to project Indo-Nepal rapport, and the Indian ambassador to Nepal Rakesh Sood Saturday gifted 20 ambulances and four buses to Nepali organisations as a goodwill gesture, the Himalayan republic’s wariness of its bigger neighbour is too deep-rooted to be erased.

Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, who will begin his first official visit to India Tuesday, had to urge party workers and the public at a gathering Saturday not to harbour any fears about his trip, saying no anti-national treaty would be signed during it. Nepal’s national interests, the communist leader said, would guide all agreements with India.

We have liberated one part when we were not even strong.

And we have enough guts which have forced you to keep thousands of soldiers in Kashmir, who are killing innocent Kashmiris. Raping innocent Kashmiri women and brutaly killing innocent Kashmiri youth specially the Educated Kashmiris in fake enocunter.

Dont you mean occupied?

Lol about guts! Instigating uneducated, intellectually challenged, desperate youth to commit atrocities and kill innocents in the name of religion and 'freedom fight' is what you call guts? If that is guts, God help you when you face real fighting men!
who are killing innocent Kashmiris. Raping innocent Kashmiri women and brutaly killing innocent Kashmiri youth specially the Educated Kashmiris in fake enocunter.

Any person who takes up arms against the Govt amounts to declaration of war against a state. The govt deserves the right ot retaliate as it deems appropriate, and combat is a very grey area, things happen! Anyhow, such people deserve to be killed, isnt that what they sign up for when they pick up that gun?

Anyway, if you dont know this, a armed force is trained to KILL. When a situation demands the govt to flood civilian city streets with troops, dont expect to be treated with kiddie gloves! Go take a walk in NWFP or other areas where the Pak army is engaged in hostilities with talib morons, and see how you will be treated. Remedy: dont create such a situation.

Wise up, elect your representatives who will talk and work for you. Guns aint gonna solve civilians' problems, only representatives can. Isnt that the reason why those terrorist morons threaten Kashmiris against voting, so that their problems cannot be solved and they blame the GoI for it? Nice try!

LOL, post some more 'interesting facts' indoctrinated about Kashmir, go ahead make our day!

There goes the horse round and round. Stop it. India signed all those stupid treaties, and gave stupid promises, when the nation was not even mature enough. Now we have grown and developed a long way, any treaty that we enter into will have to be looked into from all angles.
There where contradictions in indias stand in Kashmir and what happened in Hyderabad. But it was when the people where desperately trying to develop a nation. Now we know the smoke have settled and we know the situation around us and is more clear, and i dont think india would take any decision hastily from now as it did immediately after independence.

NO, Because the word was used by your Indian media not the Nepalis.

The Nepalis are just demanding back their land which had been occupied by India.

The Akhand Bharat ideology has been negated in this case as Nepalis despite being Hindus do not support the Akhand Bharat.

Loool again. Occupied? Dont play with words with me dear. Did you even read the article you posted? Let me quote a part of that again FYI:
"..........campaign to recover from India the Nepali land that was added to it during an Anglo-Nepali treaty signed in 1816. "So the Nepali land annexed by the British and added to India should also be released."
The land was signed away to the British in 1816 which they immediately annexed into the Indian territory under their control at the time. That was that!
And asking for it now, is like the French demanding the return of Louisiana or the Russians demanding back Alaska!

Dont you mean occupied?

Take your crap about NWFP to some other thread as well as Kashmir.

As far as NWFP is concerned it is part of Pakistan and we the people of NWFP voted for joining Pakistan in 1947 even when you bhartis were banking on Bacha khan, but we slapped you by voting for Pakistan. And the refrendum was one of the most fair one in the history of the world because it was held by the Britishers who were on your side not ours.

So we are justified in conducting operation against any miscreant.

On the other hand Kashmir is not part of India. Kashmir is on UN resoultion and an international dispute.

If your Indian army kill people in Indian Punjab for taking up arms against you, then you are justified. But NOT in KASHMIR.

Now come back to the real topic. "Nepalis want their land back from occupying India.'

Not so fast buddy.

There is another aspect to the dispute and that is Indian encroachment of Nepali land. Specially the river areas.

And what about that land which India used for establishment camps in Nepal against China during 1962 and now the Indians as usual are claiming it to be their territory.

.
no way should any land be handed over to the Nepalese...we Indians fought the british...while the Nepali royalty was busy pleasing the Britons...Nepal did not suffer what we have endured...they signed the treaty to save their a$$es from British occupation of Nepal...they made their deal...why do they want to backtrack on it now?
