Nepal will never have to face blockade again: DPM Pokahrel
- Anuj Kumar Adhikari, Beijing
Oct 27, 2018-
Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Ishwor Pokharel has said that Nepal will not have to face blockade again in the future as it has successfully signed connectivity protocols with China.
“We have faced border blockade on numerous occasions in the past, but now with the enhancement of connectivity with China, we don’t have to face such black day again,” said Minster Pokharel.
Minister Pokharel was addressing Nepali community in Beijing who had gathered to celebrate the Nepali festivals Dashain, Tihar, Nepal Sambat and Chhath on Friday evening. The programme was organised by Embassy of Nepal in China.
Saying that the Nepal is a landlocked country, the DPM said that the nation should utilise all the privileges that a land-locked country have. “Based on this concept, we have formed a roadmap to open border points and enhance connectivity with China to utilise all those facilities,” he added.
He, however, said that this does not mean that Nepal is inclined to one country and has gone against another. “We may change everything but not our neighbor,” said the minister.
He stressed that Nepal should maintain balanced relationship with India and China and continue to act as an independent and sovereign nation.
Recalling Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s China visit in 2016 and 2018 which have added new dimensions on Nepal’s trade, transit and connectivity with China and the third-country, the DPM said that Nepal will now focus on implementating of those agreements and protocols.
Minister Pokharel attended the defence ministerial-level 8th Beijing Xiangshan Forum in Beijing on Friday.
