here's a message for Mr. Nagroponte...
Meddling with Pakistan
AS A colonial ex-resident of Pakistan I found the youthful David Milibands demands for President Pervez Musharraf to respect democracy ill-informed and unrealistic (Back off, Mr Miliband its not for you to sort out Pakistans mess, Simon Jenkins, Comment, last week). As President Vladimir Putin has observed, democracy is a western construct, Russians are used to strong leadership, and this applies in greater measure to Pakistan.
Britain and America still act like proseletysing missionaries determined to force their views on farflung countries. Pakistan has its roots in tribalism and, with the exception of brief nods to western-style democracy, has been ruled by the military since it came into being. Given the demands of the Taliban and the problems on the Afghan border, Musharraf has a near impossible task.
Perhaps this time western politicians can avoid the lure of regime change.
