RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) management has laid off nearly 1,000 surplus employees and has taken other measures to reduce operational cost of the airline.

This was informed by PIA president and Chief Executive Air Marshal Arshad Malik during a meeting with Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh on Friday.

The PIA chief executive, according to a press release issued by the finance ministry, briefed Dr Sheikh on various activities and initiatives undertaken by the PIA to reduce its operational cost and increase revenues through better management and effective utilisation of available financial and human resources.

Dr Sheikh asked the PIA to pursue independent, sustainable business plan and said the government wanted the national flag carrier to effectively utilise its assets, improve revenue streams and ensure efficiency and financial discipline.

The adviser stressed the importance of a viable and independent corporate plan to help the PIA overcome its difficulties and achieve sustainability in its business processes and flight operations. He said the government was fully behind the PIA management and expected it to work diligently to turn the national flag carrier into an economically stable, viable and dependable airline for local and international travellers.

Arshad Malik thanked Dr Sheikh for his guidance and support and said the PIA management had been able to lay off nearly 1,000 “redundant staff” to save costs.

He termed the ongoing Haj operation a success with almost 90 per cent efficiency achieved in the pre-Haj flight operation and they expected similar results in the post-Haj operation for which all-out efforts were made to bring back the pilgrims as per schedule.

The PM’s adviser directed his team in the finance ministry to work closely with the PIA management and extend them all possible financial help, keeping in view the availability of fiscal space.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Imran Khan had chaired a meeting of the Aviation Division in Islamabad to discuss PIA’s business plan, requirements and other issues. It was attended by Minister for Aviation Ghulam Sarwar Khan, Dr Hafeez Sheikh, Aviation Secretary Shahrukh Nusrat and Arshad Malik.

The prime minister directed the PIA chief executive to improve the performance of the airline and increase travel facilities. Mr Khan directed the finance ministry to cooperate with the PIA in the purchase of new aircraft.

Two narrow-bodied aircraft are expected to be included in the PIA fleet by the end of this year.

They need to layoff another 10,000 corrupt PIA workers!!!

Finally some good news .
Though people get jobless but they are only political appointments and they are only removing those with fake degrees that's why you see no hue and cry in media .
Otherwise if any genuine person was removed they would have destroyed the airlines by now through media .
If pia just stops doing the deficit and then built on that. It would be great

Great News!

They need to layoff another 10,000 corrupt PIA workers!!!
There is a guy in my street, who is originally from Hazara(hindko speaker), who is an employee at PIA, never seen him going to office, runs his own business, and regularly draws his pay from PIA.
Another guy, drives taxi, but he is teacher at local govt school. Same story.
When CEO of PIA also takes the affairs as part Time job, then you can't do much to correct things. Just fire everyone in the management in second layer just below the CEO(head harami) and CEO him self.

Reduce 50% employees and hired contract workers with better pay but without any benefit. Contract employees can’t join work union because they are only contractor.

PIA must do employees re-evaluations to track the employees performance. Whistle blower act can applied to all departments and in every government institution. Anyone who provides any information about ghost employees or any wrong doing will be rewarded (5,000 10,000 or 50,000 depend on the case).
To eliminate ghost employees in every department, PIA must use biometric login with CC Camera to make sure the finger print match the person.

Start with PIA and then move to other government own businesses and institutions.

Punjab University removed majority of contractual employees who had served it well through the years, and there was no hue and cry in the media.

Mass lay offs are not a positive development in any field or context. These initiatives are always under the pretext of cost-cutting and improving systems but nothing of the sort happens in the manner it is originally claimed.

PIA seeks Rs10b more to stay afloat

ISLAMABAD: The government on Friday showed its reluctance to bail out Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) due to its hands being tied by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan agreement as the PIA management sought another injection of nearly Rs10 billion to remain afloat.

The PIA management demanded the bailout package in a meeting with Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh. After coming to power, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government has already given two bailout packages costing the exchequer nearly Rs38 billion.

The fresh assistance was sought to back foreign loans and for the repair of aircraft.

However, the IMF agreement did not permit the Ministry of Finance to extend further sovereign guarantees to help the PIA management borrow money from commercial banks, sources in the Ministry of Finance told The Express Tribune.

The IMF has placed a performance criterion to keep sovereign guarantees at Rs1.611 trillion during the current fiscal year. Of this, PIA’s sovereign guarantees stood at Rs212 billion, although the federal cabinet in February this year approved an extension in the sovereign guarantee limit to around Rs222 billion.

Owing to the same IMF restriction, the government has not been able to borrow Rs200 billion through Sukuk to retire the circular debt. The IMF has imposed these restrictions in order to bring fiscal and administrative discipline in the loss-making enterprises.

At the end of first year of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government, the public sector enterprises’ (PSEs) debt surged to Rs2.1 trillion – an addition of 47% in just one year.

Sources said the PIA management requested the finance ministry to extend a support letter in order to fully exhaust the guarantees.

“The adviser instructed the Ministry of Finance to work closely with the PIA management and provide them all possible financial help, keeping in view the availability of fiscal space,” according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance.

A ministry official said the exact quantum of financial support could only be determined after holistically reviewing claims of the PIA management that it had enhanced revenues and cut costs.

PIA Chief Executive Officer Air Marshal Arshad Malik claimed that due to optimal utilisation of PIA assets, there had been a significant reduction in operational cost of the airline.

Malik said the PIA management had been able to lay off nearly 1,000 redundant staff to save costs, stated the finance ministry.

The CEO termed the ongoing Hajj operation a success with almost 90% efficiency achieved in pre-Hajj flights and expected similar results in the post-Hajj operation for which all-out efforts were made to bring back pilgrims as per schedule.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has appointed Malik as the CEO amid apprehensions among his cabinet ministers over Malik’s experience of handling a commercial airline.

The federal government is also picking the interest on over Rs200 billion worth of PIA’s loans. It has allocated Rs24 billion in the current fiscal year’s budget to service PIA’s debts.

Through a letter in September 2008, the federal government, being the majority shareholder, had assured to keep PIA as a ‘going concern’ and had been injecting money, directly or indirectly.

In addition to the already provided Rs212 billion worth of sovereign guarantees, the finance ministry has also injected Rs50 billion in cash into the airline.

After coming to power, the PTI government struck PIA off the privatisation list without first framing a plan to revive the ailing airline.

PIA owed $125.84 million to foreign creditors, which were backed by sovereign guarantees. Due to rupee depreciation, the value of these guarantees has gone down by Rs7 billion, which the management is now seeking from the finance ministry.

Shaikh told the PIA management that the government wanted the national flag carrier to effectively utilise its assets, improve revenue streams and ensure efficiency and financial discipline, stated the finance ministry.

PIA revenue jumps 30% in Jan-Jun 2019

Sources said the finance ministry asked PIA to vacate some of its sovereign guarantees and create fiscal space within its existing pipeline of Rs212 billion.

Shaikh stressed the importance of a viable and independently designed corporate plan to help PIA overcome its difficulties and achieve sustainability in its business processes and flight operations.

His statement suggests that the government now wants PIA to stand on its feet instead of running towards the Q Block repeatedly to get bailout packages.

Very very good start. Excellent move by the government. Restructure and reorganize every nook and corner in the country.

Many more need to go ASAP. We need a lean and knowledgeable workforce. Not a burdensome surplus workforce.

Such measures need to be replicated from top to bottom in society at large. The previous governments have screwed the natural balance. The government needs to restore the balance.
