The Centre’s decision not to renew license of NGOs having access to foreign funding has hit Christian missionaries in the North East, Shillong MP Vincent H Pala said in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
Pala said the government refused to renew licenses of more than 1,400 NGOs last year over violations of the Foreign Contributions Regulation Act, 2010.
A vast majority of the sufferers are Christian missionaries in the North East who are working for the cause of the poor, the Shillong MP said.
Licenses of over 14,000 NGOs have been cancelled till date for violation of FCRA, Pala pointed out. As per official records, more than 25,000 NGOs are active and using the FCRA online services.
