Why are people from Nagaland called Naga? Do they claim to descend from snakes?

no, its the outsiders who calls them naga, otherwise they identify themselves by their tribe and locations.
All of them however created a political identity after ww2 and started using the generic term "naga" for all the tribes living in eastern hills of assam, northern and western manipur.
The only thing uniting them and separating them from other tibeto-burman speaking tribes like mine is their political identity that`ve they created.
If we start to support them politically than my tribe will become naga too.
For example their are naga tribes in manipur like "anal" "maring" "mao" who are linguistically and culturally similar to kuki people(another major group which includes tribes of Mizoram) yet considered as naga.
