GSDP for the North East Has Grown By 10 per cent
The North-Eastern have witnessed unprecedented development due to the Congress-led UPA government's thrust towards the creation of quality infrastructure. Some of the key achievements are:
• Total Central Assistance doubled from Rs. 34764 crore (10th Plan) to Rs. 73374 crore (11th Plan).
• Major expansion in Railway development: 20 projects underway of which 10 national.
• 81% of the East West Corridor (500 km) complete, likely completion date December 2014.
• 1215 km of the Special Accelerated Road Development Project (4099 km) complete, and 2505 km sanctioned.
• 58% of the Trans Arunachal Highway programme (2319 km) sanctioned. Completion between June 2016 and March 2018.
• NE’s total generation capacity: 4080 MW; under development: 6810 MW
• National Waterway 2 on Brahmaputra (891 km) provides scope for eco friendly and cheap transport for commodities and people.
• Air Connectivity: average weekly air departures more than doubled from 226 (2001) to 497 (2012).
• New Airport’s being planned/developed at: Pakyong, Itanagar, Cheihu
• Existing airports being modernized at: Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Shillong, Imphal, Agartala.
