Powering the relationship: Nawaz wants energy, not aid, from China – The Express Tribune

While the refrain when it comes to Pakistan’s relations with the US has usually been ‘trade not aid’, with China it seems to be ‘energy not aid’.
In his meeting with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on Thursday, prime minister-to-be Nawaz Sharif sought Beijing’s assistance in overcoming the country’s worsening power crisis and urged him to further expand cooperation in the civil nuclear technology sector.
“Instead of aid, we have asked China to invest in Pakistan’s energy sector,” a senior PML-N official told The Express Tribune. “It will help us overcome our energy shortage and create new jobs, and at the same time be beneficial to China,” he added.
A day earlier during his meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari, the Chinese premier offered his country’s help in resolving Pakistan’s energy crisis.

During the meeting, both leaders discussed ways to further strengthen existing bilateral and strategic relations. Nawaz expressed an eagerness to avail Chinese expertise in order to develop infrastructure in Pakistan and asked Premier Keqiang to develop the Gwadar Port as early as possible to kickstart economic activity in the country. The two leaders also discussed a range of regional and international issues of common interest.
“The PML-N chief has yet to take oath of his office and was thus not in any position to make any agreement but he will be materialising proposals [discussed in the meeting] when he would travel to Beijing,” added the PML-N official..
Congratulating Sharif on his party’s success in the general elections, the Chinese premier also invited the PML-N chief to visit China.
“China views Nawaz Sharif as a sincere and committed friend, whose contribution to expanding cooperation between the two countries is highly appreciated,” a statement quoted Premier Li as saying. Following the meeting, Sharif told reporters that he would visit China at the earliest after taking the oath of office, and it seems its not just energy that will be on the agenda.
“A team of experts will go with Sharif in his visit to Beijing who will materialise the proposals in several sectors other than energy as well,” the party official added.
Meeting with services chiefs Along with meeting the man who will be the next civilian head of government, the Chinese premier also met Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, along with the other services chief and the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, on Thursday.
They highly commended the China-Pakistan Defence and Security Consultations Mechanism, and resolved to maintain the momentum of high-level visits between the armed forces of the two countries and exchanges between military academics, while also deepening cooperation in counter-terrorism personnel training and identifying new areas for exchanges and cooperation.
Joint statement
In a joint statement issued at the conclusion of Chinese Premier’s two-day visit, Islamabad and Beijing agreed to further deepen practical cooperation in all sectors and strengthen coordination and cooperation on international and regional issues.
The Chinese premier reaffirmed support Pakistan’s efforts to uphold its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrit. In return, Pakistan reiterated that friendship with China is the cornerstone of its foreign policy as well.
According to the statement, tThe statement also said that both sides believe that terrorism, separatism and extremism pose a serious threat to regional peace, stability and security, and reaffirmed their resolve to continue cooperation to combat the ‘three evil forces’.
“China recognises that Pakistan has made great efforts and sacrifices to combat terrorism, and reiterates that it respects the anti-terrorism strategy developed and implemented by the Pakistani side in light of its own conditions,” the statement read.
Pakistan reaffirmed its resolve to combat terrorism, and commits to continuous, active collaboration with and assistance to China in combating terrorist forces including the East Turkestan Islamic Movement.

.
As if he was gonna get any....These are Chinese not Saudis. Unlike the later Chinese care about Pakistan rather than looking after the corrupt lot. Enough said. :china:

.
Actually if you know China doesnot give Aid, it has always assisted Pakistan.

Even the LeT, JeM and other assorted anti-India groups? Nope! These yahoos are Pakistan Army's 'strategic assets' as Kayani himself mentioned to his American counterpart!

So, guys, don't pop the champagne just yet! It's going to me more of the same. :P Till the cows come home! :cheesy:

.
NS doing his best to solve energy crises and help from our brotherly countries China, Saudia and Turkey is way better than IMF.

I don't know why Ilzam khan Niazi party boycotted the visit of Chinese Premier maybe he don't have any plans for KPK or he did this deliberately to please his masters.

.
Civilian Nuclear Deals are only way to go. And should be done in quick sessions.

Give these tasks to SS, and then consider it DONE.

.
:omghaha: Meanwhile NS ready to accept $15B bailout Aid from skeikhan e sheikh.

PS. China has the policy of assisting Pakistan, due to corrupt regimes China never gives Aid only if calamity had hit it gaves reordered Aid so money doesn't go here or there. But gladly China provides Aid to the world because China believes and trust others more than any Pakistan regime.

.
One thing which is good about Chinese is that they invest in Projects rather than bribing the scums like yanks. ATM i am more worried about cost of $15b package from KSA. Either we have to sacrifice IP & Gawadar port & embrace sharia of talibans or not? Anyway - everything will be clear within next few months.

How should Pakistanis read this "Energy not Aid" idea?? It should be read as what it is, namely, another slogan - nothing but a slogan - After all, what is it's content?? IS China an energy exporter?? Some say that what this really means is that China should provide more nuclear power plants -- but it takes up to decades for such plants to produce power, that is if the international situation will allow such - and since Pakistan is unwilling to counter Islamist terrorism, this is a bit of a non-starter.

For Pakistan t end it's energy crisis, it must first defeat islamist terrorism --WTH?? What are you on about muse? Have you taken your medication today? Are you not the same US, Zionist NYT inspired twit that says Pakistan should take great acre of it's relationship with China??

OK, so why must Pakistan first defeat Islamist terrorism in order to solve it's energy crisis?? First of all this crisis is a crisis because our economy has been unable to grow, after all there is plenty of oil and gas in the world, but you have to pay for what you buy, isn't this so??

So how else, short of paying for energy, can we solve this crisis? We have to explore for energy within Pakistan and it's EEC, right? Why do companies want to explore hydro-carbon potential in Pakistan and it's EEC when their investment is not secure and when the international situation is such that a failure to combat the menace of islamist terrorism, is seen as a threat to the international order itself?

So, how can Pakistan attract Chinese and Russian companies to explore the offshore potential?? What is that both want of Pakistan? What is that both fear Pakistan continues to have a weakness for??

Others say, the the monetization or the creation of the Circular Debt into financial instruments will allow us to solve the crisis - possibly but that is only a small part of any solution -- see the circular debt only exists because we are unable to PAY for the energy that we use, right? So we are back to the problem of growing the economy, and since the PML-N is pretty much the same bunch of criminals as the PPP is (actually the system in which they act leaves them little choice but to be criminals), that is to say that the same failing state enterprises such as PIA, Steel mills, Railways and such, are going to be retained but with
"honest" management (yeah right!, refer to "system"), we can expect more failure.

But They Are The Winners?
PMLn S Managment Still Better Thn PPP, In ÑA They Dont Need Number Of Votes To Make The Govt, In Center They Still Form Govt, So Things Might Not Be So Dark Any How?
All Togather They are In Better Position Thn Past PPP Govt, & Thier Meeting With Chinese premire Is A Good Thing Happening Itself?
Yes China Isnt Is The Huge Energy Exporter ! But Still Has Huge Bank Accounts To Buy & sale Those Energy Assests?

.
Pakistan's energy problem, is it due to a lack of power plants and power infrastructure, or is it due to an inability to get the resources to power these plants?
