‘Nawaz Sharif’s passport to expire in February, could apply for asylum in UK’
Web Desk On Dec 21, 2020 Last updated Dec 21, 2020

ISLAMABAD: Adviser to Prime Minister on Accountability and Interior Shahzad Akbar on Monday said that efforts were underway to bring back the absconding PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif from London, ARY NEWS reported.

Speaking during ARY NEWS programme, Power Play, Shahzad Akbar said that although they do not have an agreement to exchange prisoners with the UK, however, there are international agreements that could prove useful in bringing back Nawaz Sharif.

“We want Britain to deport the former prime minister because his visa for 185 days has already expired,” he said adding that the PML-N leader has filed an application for an extension in his visa.

We have put forward the entire situation before Britain’s home secretary and asked their authorities as to what treatment the absconding PML-N leader is currently undergoing and if this treatment is available in the UK alone, he said while detailing the argument the Pakistan government has put before the British authorities.

Shahzad Akbar said that Prime Minister Imran Khan has categorically directed to bring back Nawaz Sharif so that he could face legal proceedings against him like a common man.

He further said that the passport of the former prime minister is going to expire in February and it is possible that he may apply for asylum in Britain. The adviser compared the PML-N supremo with the MQM founder if he chooses to opt for asylum in the UK.

You know he’s already in protective custody for years? Asylum seeking is not even necessary, it’ll just be stinging formality to rub in Pakistan’s joke of judicial system’s face.

What are the procedures for former PMs renewing their passports?

Is it simpler for them than the average citizen?

Now that Nawaz is in the UK, there is no conceivable legal way to bring him back by force or pressure. There is no treaty of extradition between the UK and Pakistan (see this as an example). His treatment, whatever you may think of it, will not be investigated by authorities here, and details of it are not allowed to be shared with anyone without the patient's formal consent.

Actually, Nawaz would never have been allowed to enter the UK as a convict, if it were not for the efforts of the government of Pakistan, and formal requests to the UK Home Office, to allow Nawaz entry to the UK in the first place. As for Nawaz's status as a convict in the UK, he has no such status here, all charges occurred in Pakistan, the court cases were in Pakistan, and even the bail was granted by Pakistani authorities, as well as the necessary procedures undertaken to allow him to travel, and the extraordinary measures to request the UK authorities to allow him entry.

So the government has already given him up fully, there's no way that I see of getting him back. Most likely scenario, he'll be back only when he himself decides to return. Things could change given a lot of effort, but I don't see any easy way.

He'll most likely get it renewed. Government would just make it easier for him to stay in the UK if they don't renew. Then again, even this is highly politicised, let's see what happens.

If Hussain Haqqani's passport can get renewed I don't see a problem at all for Nawaz Sharif.

Having said that, let's test the UK over this.

The Hindu Zionist bitch Priti Patel will never support the Pakistan government. She will support Nawaz's stay7 in the UK. After all Pakistani politicians are the stooges of the West
