Nawaz Sharif warns intelligence agencies to mend ways
* PML-N chief says agencies should not run a parallel govt
* Army, intel agencies budget be presented in assembly
* All institutions should be subservient to civil authority
LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif asserted on Saturday that the countrys security agencies should not run policies parallel to the government and the state institutions should be subservient to civil authority.
Addressing a news conference at his Raiwind residence after a meeting with the US Ambassador to Pakistan, Cameron Munter, the former premier called on the security agencies not to indulge in making an alliance or dividing political forces.
He stressed that the government should define the foreign policy and not the agencies. They (agencies) should work within their constitutional ambit, Nawaz said, and avowed that his party would not allow a government within a government.
The PML-N chief renewed his demand for formation of an independent commission to launch a probe into the Abbottabad incident at the earliest. He warned that if a free probe body was not constituted his party would be forced to evolve its future strategy in this respect, saying, People want to know the facts pertaining to the Abottabad operation. He stressed that an independent commission would help bring facts to light, besides exposing those responsible.
Nawaz also demanded that army and intelligence agencies budget should be presented in the National Assembly. He said the government wanted to absolve itself of the responsibility of the Abbottabad incident, which had violated the countrys sovereignty. He criticised that resolution of the government on the Abbottabad incident as weak, and said nobody was held responsible in the resolution. He alleged that, earlier, there was no word against drone attacks in the resolution but the PML-N got it incorporated in the resolution. He said the PML-N had done no point-scoring in the National Assembly but had asked all those questions which masses wanted to ask about the Abbottabad incident.
The PML-N leader said Pakistanis rendered great sacrifices to weed out terrorism from society and the countrys economy had suffered a lot, adding that around 35,000 Pakistani citizens and security personnel had lost their lives so far in the war on terror.
He regretted that despite all such sacrifices Pakistan is being held in the dock. The US raid in Abbottabad was against the sovereignty and integrity of Pakistan, he said, and added that recurrence of what transpired in Abbottabad should not be allowed.
Nawaz Sharif said ties with the US could not be unilateral, and added that it should be sensitive to Pakistans concerns. He said that it was deeply regrettable that Pakistan airbases were being used for drone attacks. agencies
