Meeting between Nawaz, Musharraf?

These days news about a meeting between Nawaz Sharif and General Pervez Musharraf (Retd) in Saudi Arabia has hit electronic and social media. It is not blankly denied by either party. Speaking on a TV programme, Major General Rashid Qureshi (Retd) and Ahmad Raza Kasuri had neither denied nor accepted it. As NS and PM both visited Saudi Arabia in recent months, the observers presume a meeting must have taken place.

They support their arguments primarily on the way Pervez Musharraf spoke in his last press conference about his return to Pakistan and the way his body language reflected his decision which was contrary to similar announcements previously. One can look at this meeting against certain perspectives.

American perspective; Zardari who is known for pulling out gun from his hip at eleventh hour, shot the Americans in their back when he agreed to hand over Gwadar to Chinese and let Pak-Iran gas pipeline deal go through. Americans would do anything to kill these deals or at least put a break to them. Coming eighteen months are crucial for them when they leave Afghanistan. They don't want to see Chinese holding the jugular vein of the world economy at Gwadar or let an under-sanctioned Iran supply gas to Pakistan.

KSA perspective; Saudis are weary of creeping Iranian influence in the Arab world especially after the 'Arab Spring'. With opening of Pak-Iran gas pipeline they can see Iran not only increasing its influence towards nuclear Pakistan but in the process losing Pakistan as its trusted friend. They want to keep Iran politically isolated from Pakistan.

Chinese perspective; Chinese know their ability to progress economically and their policies are centred on financial viability. For them, it is economically important to have access to Gwadar. If that access is prized with having physical control over the port nothing like it. Through physical presence Chinese can come out the most important player in future global power politics by gaining control over world oil pathways. In this symmetry they see Iran as their potential ally.

Iranian perspective; Iran sees itself an important player in world politics and politics of Islamic world. By signing the gas pipeline deal it sees itself becoming part of the symmetry with hope that India will join later. It also sees itself getting closer to Chinese when they take control of Gwadar.

Indian perspective; India has already shown its resentment about the Gwadar deal calling it 'Chinese desire to encircle India'. Earlier, they withdrew from Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline deal under American pressure in which they got cozy nuclear facilitations as a sweetener.

Army perspective; Army is the only institution in Pakistan which makes decisions, based on strategic and tactical plans in relation to country's stability and geographical borders. They know the geographic realities well, so they are aware of importance of the surrounding countries. The recent announcement by General Kayani shifting external threat from India to internal threat of terrorism was reflective of those realities. According to some, the army is in favour of the two deals despite its amicable understanding with the Pentagon. They pressurised AAZ to sign the deals fearing if NS won the elections they would have problem convincing him.

AAZ's perspective; He realises the poor performance of PPP government during the five years. At the end of his tenure, he wants to do something which will wash away his poor image, hence the deals. Also he sees poor chance of his re-election to Presidency. Fearing persecution after the elections, he wants a safe passage to settle in the UAE or in London. With these deals, the army would be willing to oblige him.

NS's perspective; He is entangled with pro-Taliban and anti-Taliban groups within the party; a resentful army; intentions of having cordial relations with China; a suspicious American attitude towards him; ambiguous policy towards India with regards to Kashmir and trade openings; and a unclear policy towards Iran and Afghanistan. Whatever the apparent ambiguities, he is absolutely clear about friendship with Saudi Arabia which he takes very seriously. In the middle of these difficulties he is taking careful steps with apparent casualness. And that's how he operates; mixing seriousness with casualness. This combination makes people think he is careless or even oblivious to real issues. I observed him in meetings at the Duke Street in London for over two years. In those meetings, he would quietly listen to everyone with emotionless face without interrupting communicating flow, correcting individuals in their opinions, or giving his viewpoints. At the end of such meetings, he would round them up with brief remarks or even no remarks. When it came to decision-making, he was firm, confident and non-opinionated. He changed profoundly since his forceful removal in 1999 and started playing political games sometimes in his court sometimes in others. With such personality, surrounded by intriguing traps full of ambiguities, he knows he cannot ignore army's opposition, Saudi Arabia's annoyance and America's distrust on expense of refusing to meet Pervez Musharraf. This apparent meeting should be taken as part of his game play in different courts. Clever people can kill two birds with one stone. With this apparent meeting, he killed three which makes him statesmanly smart.

so the question is how nawaz sharif and his lame party members turned a blind eye on Musharraf all of a sudden??? is it NRO 2 that Saudi arabia broke between the two in the direct or indirect secret meeting between Musharraf and Nawaz?

I'm so surprised that the people expect judiciary to act upon N.Sharif's personal request? :omghaha:

And yes enough proof... but only for kids!

Backdoor deal: ‘Saudi clout’ paving way for Musharraf’s return

Former president Pervez Musharraf has chosen a vaguely familiar path to return to Pakistan from his nearly four-year exile, relying on the intervention of the Saudi royal family and its clout over one of his arch-enemies.
Talking to The Express Tribune, a close aide to Musharraf – who is due to arrive at Karachi airport around 12:45pm today – revealed that following closed-door meetings with the Saudi royals, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has agreed to refrain from creating any trouble for the former dictator upon his return. He added that in light of the threats issued against Musharraf by the Taliban, the country’s security agencies would provide security to the former president.
According to the aide, both PML-N head Nawaz Sharif and army chief Ashfaq Parvez Kayani paid visits to the kingdom recently to discuss issues pertaining to Musharraf’s return and the upcoming elections in Pakistan. Musharraf himself met the Saudi rulers as well on separate occasions, he added.
PML-N’s top leadership has remained tight-lipped on the alleged deal over Musharraf’s return. Both Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Khawaja Saad Rafique refused to comment on the issue when contacted.
PML-N spokesperson Ahsan Iqbal, however, denied any deal with Musharraf and maintained his party’s stance remained unchanged. He claimed the former dictator had tried to use diplomatic pressure to meet Nawaz Sharif, but his request was turned down by the latter.
“For his crimes against the nation and the Constitution, Musharraf must face charges in the court of law,” he said, adding that his party would have no objection if the former president was cleared by the courts.
In his October 12, 1999 coup, Musharraf overthrew PML-N’s government and forced the party’s chief and then prime minister Nawaz Sharif into exile for nearly eight years.
Despite this, the party still appears to have softened its stance with regards to the former dictator ever since its chief returned from his visit to Saudi Arabia. Talking to the media upon his return from Jeddah last week, Nawaz Sharif said that Musharraf, being a citizen of Pakistan, has a right to live in the country, and that it is against Quranic teachings to deprive a person of his homeland.
PML-N’s new stance stands in sharp contrast with its previous hardline stance regarding Musharraf. The party had previously given the then ruling Pakistan Peoples Party a tough time for failing to prosecute Musharraf under Article 6 of the Constitution over his unconstitutional steps – his coup in October 1999 and his decision to send judges packing during his second martial law in 2007.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Raza Kasuri, the senior vice president of Musharraf’s All Pakistan Muslim League (APML), confirmed a deal with the PML-N. “If no such deal had been made, then why was Nawaz Sharif citing divine verses in favour of Musharraf’s return,” he asserted, when contacted by The Express Tribune.
Talking about security arrangements for Musharraf’s return, Kasuri said, “We have a team of retired Special Services Group commandos, which includes two former Inter Services Intelligence lieutenant colonels, providing security for our party chief.”
Responding to another question, he said that as per the ‘blue book’, security agencies were bound to provide security to a former head of state. According to Inspector General Bani Amin, however, the usual security protocol consists of five police personnel.
A former federal minister, however, told The Express Tribune that under the deal struck with Saudi intervention in 2008 with the army chief as a guarantor, the government was bound to ensure Musharraf’s security when he chose to return.
The PML-N joined the government under the same deal, and was, in return, supposed to give the former president indemnity.
Under the deal, the chief ministers of the subsequent government were also supposed to take oath under Musharraf, the minister continued. He added, however, that the PML-N chose not to honour this commitment fearing public backlash at the time. This, he maintained, led to the former president’s decision of choosing self exile.
Taliban threaten to kill Musharraf
The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have threatened to kill Musharraf once he returned to Pakistan.
In a video message released on Saturday, TTP operative Adnan Rasheed – a former Pakistan Air Force technician who was involved in the attempt to assassinate the former president during his tenure – said the group has prepared a special force, comprising snipers, suicide bombers and a special assault team, for the sole purpose of killing Musharraf.
Rasheed had previously been imprisoned in Bannu jail after being sentenced for masterminding the attacks on Musharraf. He was freed by the Taliban in last April’s brazen assault on the prison.
In a news conference in Dubai, meanwhile, Musharraf downplayed the threats saying he was not afraid of TTP’s ‘hollow’ statements. “I’m not the kind to be scared by such threats made only with words.”

Backdoor deal:

lol another article based on speculations

Almost all channels, many news agencies, local and international have reported the secret meeting between nawaz sharif and Musharraf arranged by the Saudies, further the sudden change of tone from pmln, I mean not a single word is spoken on arrival of Musharraf by nawaz or its lame leaders can be seen under the effect of the report of Nawaz-Musharraf deal ???

Is that the best that this Inqalabi can do ? another PML N Mocking thread , When do you guys understand that each and every propaganda attempt degrading your own Party Image . When did Musharaf become that important that He should be mentioned in such an important speech . better You guys should keep your "bashing tactics during speeches" limited to Your own Inqalabi Party cuz that the best you guys can do.

No. I don't suspect there is a 'deal' along the lines of the NRO.
Musharraf had every right to be back in Pakistan. Indeed, he was in a self-exile. Courts have been hostile to Musharraf but even they have issued bails to Musharraf. So he was able to land freely.
Nawaz Sharif is not in power. Even in Punjab there is/will soon be, an interim setup. Other than hiring some goons to attack Musharraf what could NS do?
At most the Saudis may have called for some 'decency' in interactions.

BTW, it is Nawaz Sharif's BIGGEST obsession to spit on Musharraf's face in a prison cell and then see him (Musharraf) get some severe punishment. Nawaz Sharif is biding his time for if/when we becomes the PM...

Media also reported, the mother of all deals 'mesaq-e-jamhooriyat' brokered by UK among Imran Khan, Asif ALi Zardari and N.Sharif.
Where it was decided that Imran Khan will not divide PPP vote and hence will refrain from taking part in elections and let PPP rule for 5 years, and will control the public during Zardari's rule.
