Bangladesh Navy is going to add two maritime patrol aircraft to its fleet for better securing the country's vast maritime territory, bigger than the total landmass.

The Tk241-crore jets are expected to equip the naval force for extensive aerial surveillance of deep-sea piracy in Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and illegal fishing by Indian, Thai and Myanmar fishermen, said navy sources.

It takes hours for a naval ship or patrol boat to rush from one location to another in the vast coast and deep sea, allowing miscreants an easy escape.

With the introduction of the patrol planes, it will be much easier to check arms smuggling and human trafficking along the country's 714-kilometre coastline stretching from the Hariabhanga to the Naf river.

Besides, the aircraft will conduct expeditious search and rescue operations and ensure security of gas rigs and other installations along the coastline.

Of the country's 1.64 lakh square km total maritime area, the EEZ extends 200 nautical miles into the sea from the coastline. All the resources (fish, minerals, mines) in an EEZ belong to the country concerned.

The navy entered into a contract with RUAG Aerospace Services of Germany on June 23 to procure the Dornier 228NG planes, which will be delivered in two years' time.

The jet is a modernised version of old Dornier used in Germany, Japan and Norway and is suited to detect oil slicks and carry out environmental research with sophisticated sensors.

Officials requesting anonymity said as per the deal the bodies of the aircraft would be manufactured by RUAG in Germany. However, the engines, surveillance radar and other major equipment would be produced in the USA.

According to the RUAG website, the deal includes comprehensive training of pilots and ground crew and aircraft maintenance on location. The manufacturer will also ensure supply of spare parts and maintenance for 15 years.

Highly placed sources said the navy had to pick the third lowest bidder to procure the jets, as the two better bidders failed to produce an export guarantee (a government assurance for export) on time.

Earlier, the navy missed a procurement deadline in the last fiscal year due to a similar situation.

The naval force meanwhile purchased two maritime helicopters from Italy in mid-June for routine surveillance, search and rescue. The choppers are attached to BNS Bangabandhu--a frigate with helipad and hanger facilities.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to launch the naval aviation service by the end of this year.

It is now confirmed :yahoo:

Awesome news :smokin:

This is a very old news. This was confirmed by Ruag 2 months back in July itself. I don't know how come Bangladeshi media woke up today.

RUAG: Bangladesh Navy purchases two modern Do 228NG’s

Following customers in Japan, Norway and Germany, the Bangladesh Navy has purchased two modern Do 228NG (New Generation) turboprop aircraft. The aircraft will be used for maritime air patrol and rescue mission along the countries’ coastline.

The two Do 228NGs are the first fixed wing aircraft to be purchased by the Bangladesh Navy for patrolling its coast line. For this purpose, both aircraft are being equipped with special equipment for maritime air patrol operations. This includes radio and navigation aid and other selected systems as well as rescue equipment.

Cost-effectiveness and ease of use seal the decision in Do 228NG’s favour

With the Do 228NG, RUAG Aviation has asserted itself against the competition. "The cost-effectiveness and, despite its sophisticated technology, ease of use sealed the decision in favour of the Do 228NG," enthuses Alexander Müller, Vice President Military Aviation Germany. In addition to the two aircraft, the contract includes comprehensive pilot and aircraft maintenance training for the Navy ground crew on location. Delivery of both aircraft is scheduled for early summer 2013.

The Do 228NG is a versatile turboprop aircraft. Alongside transporting up to 19 passengers, it can also be configured as a special mission version for various purposes including maritime air patrol. Thanks to the latest sensor technology, the aircraft is ideally suited to detecting oil slicks, controlling borders and fishing, and carrying out environmental research. The Do 228NG is a completely modernized and improved version of the Dornier 228-212, RUAG Aviation carries out final assembly, integration of customer-specific equipment and delivers the aircraft from its Oberpfaffenhofen facilities near Munich (Germany).

Now coming to the main question. The article talks about the aircraft getting manufactured in Germany with parts from US where as RUAG had a deal with HAL to manufacture all the future Do-228 aircrafts for RUAG orders.

Why does the article say they are jets? The 228 NGs are turbo-prop.

HAL supplies just the airframe to RUAG. Avionics, propeller is from elsewhere.

Same news with new title :hitwall::hitwall: :hitwall:

When a defence purchasing news like this is re-published, it may mean a final decision has been reached after many months of bureaucratic tanglings. It happens all the time with defence related purchasing.

the aircraft is also made in India if i am not wrong.

The aircraft is only made in India now. However Bangladesh bought it from RUAG.

In 2009, RUAG started building a Dornier 228 New Generation in Germany with the fuselage, wings and tail unit manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Kanpur (India) and transported to Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich, where RUAG Aviation carries out aircraft final assembly, customized equipment installation, product conformity inspection and aircraft delivery. It is basically the same aircraft with improved technologies and performances, such as a new five blade propeller, glass cockpit and longer range.[

Its the final assembly which really matters and that is germany. It is usual for big companies to outsource smaller works to different companies all over the world. Its business as usual.

Assembled in India, correct.

Yesh agree with that. Although RUAG is the smaller company here not HAL.

Thing is, Dornier Gmbh stopped producing these planes in 1998, and then went out of business in 2002. So only HAL has the license production running and they supply the airframe/fuselage to RUAG. The HAL DO-228 has Israeli Radars and avionics though. So I can see why Bangladesh didn't buy it directly from HAL, since it would have been a bit cheaper.

Its actually RUAG which is assembling the plane, not HAL. HAL manufactures everything in house.

HAL Dornier DO-228 is a light transport aircraft manufactured under license from M/s. Dornier GmbH of Germany.

The Garrett TPE-331-5-252D Engines, Landing Gears and many of the instruments and avionics of the HAL- Dornier-228 aircraft are also manufactured in-house at different divisions of HAL.
