Navy receives warship INS Saryu from GSL

he indigenously designed new 105 metre-class warship, INS Saryu was on Friday handed over to the Indian Navy by the Goa Shipyards Limited (GSL).

INS Saryu would be the largest offshore patrol vessel to be operated by the force.

"The warship was handed over by GSL Chairman Rear Admiral (Retd) Vineet Bakhshi to Commander Amanpreet Singh-- the CO-designate of INS SARYU in a simple ceremony in Goa," the shipyard said in a release.

The Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) will help meet the increasing requirement of the Navy for undertaking ocean surveillance and surface warfare operations in order to prevent infiltration and transgression of maritime sovereignty, it said.

The warship was one of the vessels ordered by the Defence Ministry after the 26/11 attack in Mumbai in 2008.

This vessel is suitable for monitoring sea lines of communication, defence of offshore oil installations and other critical offshore national assets, the release said.

It can also be deployed for escorting high value ships and fleet-support operations, it said. Designed and built by GSL, the warship is the culmination of many years of in-house design development and ship build techniques.

Introduction

Goa Shipyard Limited is constructing four INS Saryu class stealth Offshore Patrol vessels (OPV) for the Indian Navy.

The ships are capable of ocean surveillance and monitoring, and can maintain control of shipping lanes. They can also be deployed to provide security to offshore oil installations, and other naval assets.

Capability

The 105 m long Saryu class OPVs have a displacement of about 2215 tons. They have a max speed of 25 kts, range of 6,000 nm at 16 kts and a normal endurance of 20 days, extendable to 60 days. They carry a complement of 16 officers and 102 sailors. Armed with 1 x 76 mm Ottomelara gun with FCS and 2 x 30 mm CWS they feature a helicopter landing deck and hangar. Their sensor pack includes a radar with ARPA.

Progress

The first ship, INS Saryu, was launched on March 30, 2009. Three more ships of the class - INS Sunayna, INS Sumitra, and INS Sumedha - were launched on November 14, 2009, December 6, 2010 and May 21, 2011 respectively.

All Saryu class are currently under fitment at GSL.

The ships are scheduled to be inducted end 2012 onwards.

Delay in Delivery of Gear Boxes

The project is delayed because the Indian supplier contracted to supply the gearboxes has yet to deliver them. The gearboxes have been ordered from an OEM and the first gearbox is scheduled to be delivered by early December 2011, which will enable delivery of first NOPV by November, 2012 followed by balance three NOPVs at an interval of 6 months thereafter. Goa Shipyard Indian Coast Guard Order

In May 2012, Goa Shipyard signed a Contract with MOD to build six 105M Offshore Patrol Vessels for Indian Coast Guard amounting to 1979.62 crore.
