NATO - India: Prospects of a Partnership
24/02/2012
Author : NATO Defense College (NDC - Rome)

Research Paper 73, by Robert Helbig

A core task for the Atlantic Alliance consists in further developing its partnerships. One of the potential partners is India, as the largest democracy in the world – arguably an imperfect one, but certainly more democratic than some other countries NATO is partnering with.

The latest Research Paper from the NATO Defense College analyzes the relations between NATO and India. The two parties share a number of security challenges, ranging from terrorism and piracy to instability in Afghanistan. This is why India seems to be a natural partner for NATO in a region which is of crucial interest to the Alliance. At the same time, India harbours traditional concerns vis-à-vis security alliances in general and NATO in particular.

The paper argues that in order to build a partnership with India, NATO needs to understand Indian foreign policy principles. In turn, India has to make an effort to understand the basics of the Alliance and its intentions to build a closer relationship. Cooperation between NATO and India could take place in specific fields such as counter-terrorism, as well as maritime and cyber security. Only if both sides communicate openly and effectively what they can offer for their mutual benefit can a fruitful partnership work.

“I think it is important to have a dialogue (with India) and deepen that dialogue,” US Permanent Representative to NATO Ivo H. Daalder told a group of Indian journalists on a tour of the 28-nation military alliance's headquarters here.

“It is through dialogue, through understanding each other's perceptions and perhaps by working on misperceptions that may exist that we can strengthen the relations between India and NATO.

Nato seeks greater engagement with India - Times Of India

NATO does not consider India as a missile threat despite the country's advanced missile development programme, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said.
India poses no missile threat: NATO - World News - IBNLive

As a major international donor with a considerable civilian presence in Afghanistan, India has a strategic interest not only in the security that ISAF forces provide, but also in the stabilising influence which NATO’s engagement brings to the region. NATO’s long-term success in Afghanistan, in turn, hinges on the success of the civilian reconstruction efforts that India and others provide. Afghanistan has thus become a prime example of how new challenges create new dependencies and relationships.

Hope they wont partner with India and want a military base on Indian soil. That should never happen. No foreign country should be allowed to station in India.

Go through some of the posted articles - they are very interesting - the parties involved want to take it one step at a time and understand India's concerns too.

Yeah I was merely saying cuz in 2003 the US was asking India to let them set up a base here. We refused. I hope in a fit of greed these politicians dont do something stupid  That would totally invalidate our non aligned stance. Or facade, whatever one calls it

I am not aware of any request for a base..r u sure? they asked us to put up NATO's missile defense shield and that was in 2011.

What NATO and USA want from india in disguise of partnership is British India Army type mercenary army which will work under the command of white officer from NATO country and low-level soldiers will be Indians.

Errr...well, no I am not. I seem to have misread. But yes I did read that they were "seeking" to use Indian military establishments and bases. Seems some people from the US military even met with Indian officials, but nothing beyond that. Oh well, seems we shouldnt read too much into it.

India and NATO should buddy up in my opinion. They share very similar interests in the Afgh-Pak region; then it'll also be easier to take down Pakistan for India aswell
