NATO Says Attack Killed Civilians in Pakistan

By THE NEW YORK TIMES
Published: June 25, 2007
KABUL, Afghanistan, June 24 — The NATO force in Afghanistan said Sunday that its soldiers, in pursuing Taliban insurgents on Saturday, had unintentionally chased them across the border into Pakistan, and it confirmed that NATO bombing and helicopter fire caused the deaths of several Pakistani civilians.

Pakistani military authorities had earlier placed the civilian death toll at 10.

NATO did not confirm or deny that total. But Maj. John Thomas, a NATO spokesman, said it appeared that the alliance’s forces had hit a “way station or house” that contained civilians.

“We regret the loss of life, and we certainly want to make it clear that we did not knowingly operate across the Pakistani border,” he said.

NATO’s statement comes a day after Afghanistan’s president, Hamid Karzai, chastised the United States and its allies for the “careless” use of military force.

This past week, more than 100 civilian deaths have been reported from airstrikes and artillery fire.

On Sunday, the Taliban seized 18 mine-clearing experts and four of their mine-sniffing dogs in Ghazni Province.

A Taliban spokesman said the captured men were suspected of working for American-led forces in the country.

“Our investigation is ongoing, and after the investigation we will decide what to do,” said Mullah Safiullah, a Taliban commander quoted by Reuters.

Afghanistan remains one of the most heavily mined nations in the world, a consequence of nearly 30 years of unrelenting warfare.

Sad for the loss of life;
80 people are from the previous air attack, which was on a madrassa. There were atleast 50 terrorist killed;
Atleast they acknowledged it,

I totally agree with Kashif. I think its too much ! 2 days before that incident the Afghan Forces Bombed Pakistan Territory and they are still saying that Pakistan is involved in terrorist acts in Afghanistan. I mean if we have to control Terrorism in Afghanistan then its better that we control Afghanistan and American and Allied forces should leave Afghanistan.let Afghanistan be the part of Pakistan.:pakistan:

. .
Pakistan is known for its Taliban connection, i am not suprised with Afghan assertion

Hope it never happens; we can't take care of all those people. It will be a major drain on our economy; we are already trying to get rid of them.

well i know that it will be the burdon on our economy but still there are no visa/passport among Pakistan and Afghanistan and people are used to travel freely and we cant stop them with such a big border (well i doubt with 'border').what i want to say only that if we have to control the situation in Afghanistan then leave it to us and go back to ur home USA.

. . .
USA could have just said we didnt do it....They havent,

.
now as they(NATO & Allies) have admitted that they did it.the responsibles should be trialed in Pakistani Court. after all a Pakistani's life is as precious as an American life.
