NATO is to open its first office in Kuwait, the country’s ambassador to Belgium revealed yesterday.
Ambassador Jassim Al-Budaiwi made the announcement during the third meeting of NATO’s consultative group of the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative, which began in the Qatari capital Doha yesterday.
Al-Budaiwi told the Kuwait News Agency: “The management team of the NATO alliance visited the centre and were briefed on the latest developments of opening the building, which will be the headquarters of NATO’s Regional Centre.”
The meeting, which is to take place over two days, emphasised the cooperation between NATO and the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative, and the challenges of regional security. Future prospects of the initiative, the security challenges and the war on terror were also discussed.
The Istanbul Cooperation Initiative was launched by NATO in Istanbul in 2004 which gave way for Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and UAE to form a non-member alliance with the trans-national military treaty.
