NATO supply trucks torched near Islamabad

Farhan Bokhari JDW Correspondent - Islamabad

Suspected Islamic militants torched at least 50 NATO trucks carrying supplies and fuel for Western troops in Afghanistan in an attack near Pakistan's capital city of Islamabad on 8 June.

At least 12 gunmen, armed with assault rifles, stormed a parking depot used by trucks carrying supplies for Western troops: the first attack in a suburb of Islamabad.

Previously, trucks carrying supplies for Western troops in Afghanistan have been attacked mainly in the unruly Khyber-Pashtunkhwa province - formerly known as the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) - located along the Afghan border. However, such supply vehicles were considered relatively safe in the vicinity of Islamabad.

This kind of attack appears to have become an increasingly favoured method used by Taliban militants keen to paralyse the military effort in Afghanistan.

While Pakistan offers the shortest route from the Indian Ocean to Afghanistan, the growing insecurity surrounding supply trucks has prompted the US and other NATO member countries to step up their search for alternative routes through the landlocked Central Asian republics, according to senior Western diplomats and military officials.

After the attack on 8 June, defence officials said NATO will now come under further pressure to cut down its reliance on Pakistan as the principal supply route, although they added that the transition will not be easy.

"Pakistan is one country to deal with and the government in Pakistan has always supported our need to carry supplies through this country," said one senior Western defence official. "In contrast, there is more than one country to tackle if an alternative route through Central Asia is to be developed. The choices are not easy either way," he added.

Pakistani drivers examine burnt trucks torched by suspect militants in an attack early on June 9 2010 in Sangjani, near Islamabad. The trucks were carrying military vehicles and goods for ISAF forces serving in Afghanistan. Six people were killed in the attack and several others wounded, according to local police and witnesses.

Those killed are Pakistanis and Not Americans or NATO soldiers in this attack.

NATO fuel supplies are attacked often. The routes should not be the populated ones.

Does the timing coincide with some comming or any event?

the same line you said when they killed your civilian

whats the army is doing

in short you mean u want hands up against Taliban
The high way starts from Karachi and ends in Pak afghan border near Chaman or Khyber.

Do you think such long highway can be protected all the way....

BTW you have more than 700000 Army in Kashmir and still some "terrorist" succeed is infiltrating into India. So can i ask what your army is doing?

More than 1500 container with NATO Supply (Not Afghanistan usual supply) pass every month. 15 container are not even 1 percent of what we supply every month.

Whilst i dispise the JI what i will say is take anything the MQM say with a massive pinch of salt. They have only their personal agenda to persue.

First Karachi and now Hazara... They are just as bad as the JI in achiving their strategic objective within Pakistan.

Coming back to the topic IG CTP Confirmed upto 30 armed men attacked the depot. This Depot is on the outskirts of Islamabad, it is poorly guarded and despite the administration requesting the contractor multiple times to moves the vehicles the plea fell on deaf ears (and we can see the result).

This is a strategic route for smuggling explosives and weapons into the twin cities: only recently the police seized a large cache of arms and ammo from terrorists:
DAWN.COM | National | Capital police seize cache of explosives

The ITP "community policing" neighbourhood and Watch and Ward program is paying huge dividens, nothing is ever 100% secure and clearly if anything an investigation should be launched as to why the contractor failed to move the vehicles when he was alerted of the threat.

This was only a part of the the whole conversation. In the last part Dr Miral ul Heda(JuI) stated that the 7 pakistani truck drivers who lost their lives in the incident, actually deserved their fate for they were in cohort with the Americans.

Here is the link..Watch 11th Hour ? 10th June 2010

Its towards the last 5 minutes of the program.

The strange part is the police station is less than 2 miles from the scene of the crime. They were two and half hours late, despite the fact they would have been able to see the blaze from their station.

Re the statement: There is no denying what the JI wants... We all know why the Tablig got banned in China. Because the are witless fools who don't think before they blurt out their rubbish.

Re the Police Station: This is absolute nonsense, the police station they mention is actually a patrol post. What they fail to mention is that both Islamabad and Rawalpindi Emergency services arrived within 6 mins of the fire being reported.

Sadly the media is all full of hype and low on facts. Sigh...

NATO convoys attacked in Pakistan

Sometimes I feel this War-Against Terror is a blessing in disguise for Pakistan. Multi-Million dollar equipment, that wouldn't have been in our possession in any case is now lying on our roadsides for us to inspect and send to our friends across the border.. for something people call reverse-engineering.. Hehe. I'm loving it.
