U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom names 13 nations
Panel recommends administration designate 13 as "countries of particular concern"
Designation gives secretary of state policy options to address serious violations

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A U.S. government panel listed 13 countries Friday as "egregious" violators of religious freedom.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom's annual report named Myanmar, North Korea, Eritrea, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, China, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.

It recommended that the Obama administration designate them as "countries of particular concern" or CPC.

The group has issued a watch list that includes Afghanistan, Belarus, Cuba, Egypt, Indonesia, Laos, Russia, Somalia, Tajikistan, Turkey, and Venezuela, countries that don't rise to the level of a CPC but need to be monitored.

"Unfolding events in Pakistan make clear the relevance of this theme to the 2009 Annual Report. At the time of writing, emboldened Taliban-associated extremists had advanced to within 60 miles of the Pakistani capital of Islamabad," the report said.

"In the areas they already control, these groups are imposing draconian restrictions on human rights and religious freedom and engaging in brutal acts against individuals, particularly women and local police, who refused to accede to their repressive policies."

The federal commission is bipartisan, and its commissioners are appointed by the president and members of Congress.

A CPC designation gives Secretary of State Hillary Clinton "a range of specific policy options to address serious violations of religious freedom."

It requires the secretary "to enter into direct consultations with a government to find ways to bring about improvements in the respect for religious freedom."

The report covers the period May 2008 through April. The commission was created by the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998.

"While sanctions are a possible policy option, the secretary may decide to develop a binding agreement with the CPC government on specific actions that it will take to end the violations that gave rise to the designation or take a commensurate action," the commission said. "The secretary may determine that pre-existing sanctions are adequate or waive the requirement of taking action in furtherance of the Act."

Well no surprises in the list, even though some here think India is missing. Why you guys love India so much, hey you got China there to keep you happy :)

Ok seriously, India's record is not model, but India's problems are not institutional, also cases like the 'christian massacre' are only exceptions. the so called massacre itself is some 60 ppl dead over many weeks in remote jungles, and that number includes Hindus too. Given India's size and poverty, the record is not as bad as some would like to portray here. Fact is thousands of Christian organisations continue to freely work in India, nobody has left.

One great news for Bangladesh, I think they have been dropped from the list.Good going Bongs, don't worry if you are called RAW agents by some of your own countrymen (?) :)

No ill feelings but this is for my knowledge sake can somebody explain the dichotomy....
In 1947 Jinnah said muslims ceased to be muslims and hindus ceased to be hindus we'll be pakistanis, but then he named the country Islamic republic of pakistan (so where is the secular part of pakistan).
Recently (though it is from newspaper, so if you deny it I am with you) some Sikh families were asked to give 50 million rupees by some millitants in the name of Jazia saying that muslims do Zakat so you need to pay Jazia. And if I am not wrong then it was claimed as protection money for their lives. Zakat is as per will but jazia is extrotion.
Any comments.......

Religious Violence In India
05 October 2008

Religious violence is a growing problem in parts of India. According to the International Religious Freedom Report for 2008, there were organized communal attacks against minority religious groups, particularly in states governed by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP.

In the state of Orissa, governed by a coalition government that includes the BJP, Hindu extremists attacked Christian villagers and churches in the Kandhamal district over the Christmas holiday. Approximately, 100 churches and Christian institutions were damaged, and 700 Christian homes were destroyed causing villagers to flee to nearby forests.

More violence followed in August after the murder of a prominent Hindu priest. Allegedly led by a militant youth wing of the Hindu nationalist Vishnu Hindu Parishad group, mobs torched churches and homes, displacing tens of thousands of Christians, many of whom are still in camps.

Since then, anti-Christian attacks have spread in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala in the south, and to Uttar Pradesh in the north. Some of the worst cases have occurred in Karnataka, which earlier this year voted in the Hindu nationalist party, BJP. U.S. Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom John Hanford said the violence appeared to be politically motivated, especially since some of it was carried out by police.

Unfortunately, convictions over religious violence in India are rare. Last March, a United Nations freedom-of-religion Special Rapporteur warned that the scarcity of prosecutions and “political exploitation of communal tensions” put India at risk for more violence.

The persecution of Christians in India tarnishes the long history of peaceful coexistence between Christians and Hindus. The U.S., said Ambassador Hanford, urges “all parties to refrain from violence and urge government officials to protect religious freedom throughout India and thus, preserve India’s long-standing tradition of religious tolerance.”

VOA News - Religious Violence In India

This is only violence against Christians. Almost a million people died in violence against Muslims in Gujrat, India in 2002 and in 1992. Hundreds of thousands of Sikhs were killed by Hindu fanatics in 1984.

India shouldn't be talking about religious tolerance. Its nothing but the biggest hypocricy in the world.

You forgot the three trillion Parsis over the past 1000 years!!!

Typical Omarian BS. After supporting taliban in another thread under the name of 'culture' he's wondering aloud why pakistan made the list and the inferior race India did not.

Don't panic mate, just get over your bigotry and that will go a looong way. Shameless lies will only make you Zaid Hamid :cheesy:

Of course India is not on the list. After all, the Americans want to keep them happy for as long as they can. Otherwise, who'll buy those shiny new FA/18 Superhornets and F-16IN's from them? ;)

Did U.S. forget the gang rape of nuns, burning of churches, and massacre of Christians in India just a few months ago?

The hypocritical Americans are willing to turn a blind eye. Besides, those Christians that got butchered weren't their kind. That somehow compensates the grievance I guess. India will eventually make it to the list when America sees fit. Besides, who cares about this irrelevant list made up by a bunch of politically motivated morons. There are far more important issues in this world.

Religion in India - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Some sources say the death toll was much much higher than these numbers in wikipedia. Also can anyone please explain to me why Firozpur in India was Muslim majority district before 1947 and now Muslims dont even exist in that district?

The only reason India is friends with America is because America also gives freedom of religion to its citizens :)

Seriously, why don't you suggest some ways of how Pakistan can improve its own record / perception? Since Omar is also a China expert, he can suggest ways for China too. Go ahead, make it constructive.

^ Freedom of religion in India..what a big joke!

Dont compare your hindustan to USA, theres more bharatis dieing of hunger in bharat than the entire population of Pakistan and Afghanistan put together.

Yes but when they die of hunger, they go to their respective havens, as there's freedom of religion :)

You missed my point about suggestions and only got fooled by the joke, hmmm... my bad...i should write in simple language

^ Are you dumb? Just google "gujrat 2002" "babri masjid" "1984 sikhs" "orissa christians" and just read those articles. India is the least tolerant country towards other religions.

It doesn't matter how much you kiss U.S.' a$$ you cant fool the world.

India is really the world's largest hypocricy.

Before pointing fingers at Pakistan or China you should look at your own abysmal record. India has an appalling record of providing freedom of religion to its minorities. In fact, in your home country the minorities are openly prosecuted and killed for practising their religion. The Americans know this, but will keep silent because they need you for the time being. India is light years away from being a functioning and just democracy. I can provide you with renowned human rights sources that take your illusions apart. Your friendship is only based on one thing which is mutual interests within the region. Nothing more nothing less.
